What should you do for a stress free transition from Concord to the world?

 

Summer

____    Write your resume or update the resume you have already written.

____    Identify geographic areas where you want to focus your job search.

____    Research companies with which you have an interest in seeking employment.

____    Invest in a professional interview outfit.

____    Do preliminary financial planning on what you’ll need to move, rent an apartment, purchase a car, buy furniture and household goods, pay utilities, get insurance, buy professional clothes, etc.  What type of lifestyle can you afford?

____    Determine what will be priorities for you in evaluating job offers.

____    Complete the research stages of graduate/professional schools. (www.gradschools.com or www.petersons.com may be helpful sites)

____    Begin studying for your graduate/professional school entrance exam.

____    Research and collect applications and note deadlines for applications for admissions, assistantships, financial assistance, etc.

____    Start writing your personal statement.

____    Register with Career Services at www.monstertrak.com.

 

Fall

DON’T PROCRASTINATE!!!!!

____    Meet the staff of the Career Services Office.  Make them aware of your career/education aspirations.

____    Finalize your resume.

____    Conduct job search via Internet, newspapers, networking, job fairs, Career Services website or through resources available in the Career Services office.

____    Schedule a mock interview through Career Services if you lack interview experience.

____    Attend job fairs.

____    Apply for jobs of interest.

____    Network with faculty in your discipline to learn of additional job openings.

____    Ask appropriate people if they are willing to be a reference for you.

____    Tell everyone you are looking for a particular job.  Get the word out!!!!

____    Complete graduate/professional school entrance exams.

____    Prepare applications for graduate/professional schools.  Apply early rather than waiting until close to the deadline to apply.

___      Complete your personal statement – have four to five people read it and make recommendations.

____    Apply for assistantships or be aware of deadlines to apply.

 

Spring

DON’T PROCRASTINATE!!!!!

____    Continue to apply for jobs of interest.

____    Interview for jobs.  Write follow-up letters following the interviews.

____    Be prepared to evaluate graduate/professional school or job offers.

____    Attend job fairs.

____    Plan your budget for when you will be living on your own.

____    Notify Career Services when you accept a job offer or gain acceptance to a graduate/professional school; or let them know, if you’re still looking for employment when you graduate.
