English as a Second Language (ESL)

Concord University offers an ESL program in the summer and also, during the academic year. The student receives instruction in reading, writing, and speaking English as well as TOEFL preparation.   TOEFL practice tests are given on a regular basis. Institutional TOEFL tests are given at midterm and at the end of the program.

The cost is approximately $4,500 which includes the ESL program, room, board, and books.  Once the student has achieved a score of 500 on the TOEFL, a residual ACT test is given (if applicable) and the student is placed into the regular degree program.  A student who has achieved a score of 450 on the TOEFL can take one class in the regular degree program in addition to classes in the ESL program.  The I-20 is initially issued for a 12 month period for the ESL program.  When the student receives a score of 500 on the TOEFL, an I-20 is issued for the regular degree program which is normally five years. Host families provide housing for International students when the university is not in session. The student is responsible for inquiring about host family's.

Students applying for the ESL program must fill out the main International Application and list ESL as their discipline of study and then list the discipline they plan to study in the undergraduate program.
