E Tenebris Lux “Out of Darkness, Light”- Motto of Summer Academy

Students of Excellence Summer Academy brings together high school students from across the state of West Virginia and the eastern United States who show an interest in medicine or law. The Academy enables high school students to achieve success at the college level by training them to think critically and to make connections with leaders in their field of interest. Academy members will also receive instruction from qualified educators and higher education officials in autobiographical and thesis writing, using the writing lab facilities at Concord University. Nominees who are selected will attend challenging and entertaining seminars on the subjects of history, critical thought, and philosophy. The students will participate in cultural and team building activities.

Summer Academy students will attend lectures and have hands-on experience dealing in law and medicine. The goal of the Academy is to educate and create people with better critical thinking abilities, and also to demonstrate the need for dedication to public service in their roles as future leaders.

There is NO COST for Academy attendees. Room, meals, supplies, field trips, and special dinners are all provided. All Academy attendees will receive one hour of college credit. Academy Attendees opting to attend Concord University after their high school graduation are guaranteed a scholarship award.

Successful applicants must:

-Have a cumulative high school GPA of at least 3.0 which includes courses geared for future college attendance.
-Be a sophomore or junior at the time of application
-Be capable of academic work, which includes working independently and participating in team-based activities
-Be capable of writing and making oral presentations
-Be willing to follow the tenets in the Academy Honor Code

250 word essay written by the student based on: “What is the difference between professional ethics and personal values, and how do you solve problems where professional ethics and personal values conflict?”
Document from your guidance counselor stating a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
