
Biography of James H. “Buck” Harless,Born in Taplin, West Virginia, James H. “Buck” Harless is one of the state’s most generous philanthropists and successful industrialists.
From the humble beginnings of Gilbert Lumber Company, Mr. Harless built a multi-million dollar corporation, the internationally acclaimed International Industries, Inc., of which he is chair of the board.
Mr. Harless has worked tirelessly in support of higher education in West Virginia. He has served as a member of the West Virginia University System Board of Trustees, past chair of Marshall University Board of Advisors, member of the Marshall University Foundation Board, and as a member and past chair of the West Virginia University Foundation Board.
On Saturday, May 17, 2003, Concord awarded a Doctorate of Business Administration, honoris causa, to Mr. James H. “Buck” Harless. No honorary degrees were bestowed prior to 1960 and this was the first honorary degree conferred by the College in 30 years.
Mr. Harless also has honorary degrees from Marshall University, West Virginia University, Stillman College, Pikeville College and the University of Charleston.
He is the state president of the West Virginia chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and sits on the advisory board for the Mingo County Redevelopment Authority and the West Virginia Center for the Arts & Sciences.
Harless is also chair of the Larry Joe Harless Community Center Foundation.
He was named “West Virginian of the Year” in 1983 by the Charleston Gazette/Daily Mail and the “Coal Man of the Year” in 1976 by the West Virginia Coal Association. He received the City of Hope “Spirit of Life” award in 1984, and was featured on “Success, West Virginia Style,” on WCHS television in 1984.
Mr. Harless has been the recipient of numerous additional accolades, awards and honors.
Mr. Harless and his wife, Hallie, reside in Gilbert, West Virginia.
