Dear Friends,

After announcing my plans to retire from the presidency of Concord University on June 30, 2008, Jean and I have reflected on the  inexpressible joy the past 23 years have brought us. The opportunity to do college work in an area one calls home is rare indeed in a profession that often requires moving about the country.

I am proud of our work, but as you know there is one project that remains unfinished – a dream deferred. I ask you now for your support in ensuring that an interfaith chapel becomes a reality. Our fundraising efforts are in the final stages for University Point, the much anticipated facility that will be home to the Wilkes Family Interfaith Chapel and Museum and the Erickson Alumni Center.

The structure, to be situated across from the Science Building, carries a $3.2 million price tag for Phase I. Of this amount (which does not include furnishings) $500,000 remains to be raised. Building a chapel on “the campus beautiful” has been in the minds and hearts of many Concordians for decades.

During the 1930s, Concord President J. Franklin Marsh, Sr., set as a goal the establishment of an interfaith chapel at Concord. Through the years, faithful supporters have kept interest kindled in the project, raising nearly $120,000, and establishing a foundation in the early 1980s with the intent of raising funds for the chapel’s construction. More recently, the estate of Concord alumnus L. Lloyd Moye doubled the funds for the project, prompting support from the Wilkes family and the Erickson Foundation.

Today, with the goal clearly in sight, Jean and I invite you to join us in bringing this long-anticipated project to fruition. Your gifts will help to ensure that University Point is truly a dream realized.

Many thanks, Jerry and Jean Beasley
