CRITERIA for SELECTION of AWARD RECIPIENTS at THE ATHENS-CONCORD TOWN SOCIAL

Adopted May 19, 1992

1. The Total Community Involvement Award

1a. Contributor to both the Town of Athens and Concord College.

1b. Members of the Town Social Committee are not eligible.

1c. Not necessary to be a resident of the Athens area.

1d. Both members of the town government and non-members are eligible.

1e. Can be a student, alumnus, or member of the faculty or staff at the College. Can also be a contributor of time or money to the College.

1f. Candidate for general election ineligible. Officeholders not running in the fall general election are eligible.

1g. Must not have received any of the tree awards within the last three years.

2. The Elder Citizen Award

2a. Person must be recognized by members of the Committee as on of the oldest citizens residing or having resided in the Athens area.

2b. Must have lived here at least ten years.

2c. Must not have received any of the three awards within the last three years.

3. The Business Longevity Award

3a. Person must operate, or have operated, a business in the Athens area for ten or more years.

3b. Must have contributed to Athens' life and economy.

3c. Although current business operators should be considered first, a retired person, or person whose long time Athens business has changed hands, is still eligible for the award.

3d. Must not have received any of the tree awards within the last three years.

4. Selection and Notification, etc.

4a. Chairman will seek nominations from member of the Town Social Committee. If insufficient response is obtained, the Chairman may appoint and award subcommittee. If no worthy recipient is identified at that point, award may not be presented.

4b. Once the Committee has agreed on the selections, the Chairman or Secretary will notify the honoree, at least two weeks prior to the date of the Town Social.

4c. Upon acceptance of the selection by the honoree, the Director of Public Information or his/her designee will notify the local media.

4d. Certificates signed by the Mayor of Athens and the President of Concord College will be presented to each honoree at the Town Social, if the honoree is present.

4e. The Secretary will be responsible for maintaining a list of award recipients and their current addresses.

4f. If agreed to by the members of the Town Social Committee, the Mayor or Committee Chairman will as an award recipient to become a member of the Committee for the following year.

4g. Acceptance speeches by award recipients are limited to no more than five minutes. Honorees will be notified in advance.
