High School Juniors Honored at Concord

"

We’re in the company of people who share our values here at Concord," stated President Jerry Beasley at the 5th Annual Concord College Book Awards. You take your studies seriously, you are active in your high school community, and–you have parents who support and encourage you," he continued to the group of 80 students and parents attending the ceremony.

The Concord College Book Awards are held annually on the College campus to reward high school juniors who are interested in attending college. This is the 5th year for the awards to be given by the College. Michael Curry, vice president for admissions and financial aid, selected People’s History of the United States, by Professor Howard Zinn, to award to the students. "I chose a book that will challenge you to think differently, and also challenge your commitment as a citizen," stated Curry. "We, as citizens, can’t wait for great leaders to solve problems. We have to do that ourselves. Individuals do make a difference."

The award ceremony began at 1:00 p.m. in the State Room of the College Center and included a tour of the College campus led by student ambassadors Laura Benjamin from Hollywood, Maryland, and Yanique Campbell from Jamaica. Next, Concord College Alumnus Samuel G. Hill, vice president with Investment Planning Consultants, Inc., in Bluefield; Susana Duarte, presidential scholar; and James Huffman, director of admissions, encouraged the high school juniors to follow their dreams and continue their education.

Later in the afternoon, the students participated in an outing to Pipestem State Park followed by the book award ceremony as part of a banquet.
