CONCORD PROF RECEIVES STATEWIDE AWARD

Athens, W.Va. – Dr. Eloise Elliott, professor of physical education at Concord University, was selected as the West Virginia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (WVAHPERD) “2004 Health Educator of the Year.”
Eloise Elliott, PhD, is a professor of physical education, and specializes in children's physical activity, pedagogy, and curriculum development. Dr. Elliott is the creator and director of “Healthy Hearts,” a web-based instructional module for children that is designed to teach youngsters about cardiovascular health, focusing on physical activity, good nutrition, and tobacco avoidance. Healthy Hearts is currently being implemented in fifth grade classrooms throughout West Virginia as the leading school intervention for the W.Va. CARDIAC project. Currently, Dr. Elliott is the associate director of interventions for the CARDIAC project, which includes collaborations with W.V.U. Extension Service. Other selected professional contributions include chair-elect of the West Virginia on the Move steering committee, co-chairing the physical activity committee of the West Virginia Action for Healthy Kids Team, and serving as an appointee to the executive committee of the Council of Physical Education for Children (COPEC) of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE).
Prior to joining the ranks of higher education in 1989, Dr. Elliott taught physical education and kindergarten in Mercer County schools for 13 years. She has written numerous articles, and make over 100 presentations locally and across the country. Eloise has written two instructor guides for a popular elementary physical education textbook, “Children Moving,” and authored a textbook chapter on interdisciplinary learning. She helped found the popular website, PE Central, and serves as a senior advisor to the website. In 2001, she was presented the West Virginia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (WVAHPERD) Ray O. Duncan award for outstanding professional service to West Virginia.

Dr. Kathryn Liptak, division chair of education and human performance, stated that, “Concord is fortunate to have someone with Dr. Elliott's leadership and expertise on our faculty. She is a nationally recognized expert in her field and her numerous contributions to the division, the university, and the state are invaluable. This award from her peers is well-deserved.”
AAHPERD is an alliance of six national associations, six district associations, and a research consortium, which support healthy lifestyles through high quality programs.
