Athens, W.Va. – The 131st spring commencement was held in the Leslie R. and Ruby Webb Carter Center at Concord University on Saturday, May 13.
There were 282 undergraduate candidates and three graduate candidates for graduation out of 2,722 undergraduate students and 105 graduate students enrolled at the University.
The Concord University Brass Quintet provided the prelude, processional and the recessional and Assistant Professor of English, Dr. Paul J. Kane, provided the opening and closing meditation.
Concord University President, Dr. Jerry L. Beasley, introduced three professors who are retiring: Professor of Childhood Education, Dr. April V. Puzzuoli; Professor of Biology and Department Chair of Biology, Dr. Roger Sheppard; and Professor of Physical Education, Mr. Robert C. Whittinghill, noting that together they have more than 89 years of service to the institution.
“We understand what you have done to earn your degree,” Dr. Beasley told the candidates for graduation.
Next, Mrs. Ruby Webb Carter ’41, was awarded the doctor of education, honoris causa, by President Beasley. Mrs. Margaret Sayre ’84, member of the Concord University Board of Governors and Dr. Dean W. Turner, vice president and academic dean, conducted the investiture of the degree. President Beasley read a citation that said, in part, “Ruby Webb Carter, loving wife, mother of Linda Beth, nurturer, teacher of toddlers, and caregiver and coach of little children—your dedication to teaching, tutelage and training impacts generations of teachers and students.... Teaching first grade children to read was one of your greatest rewards in life.... You are quoted as saying that, ‘Better educated teachers result in better educated students.’ Your love of children of all ages and your life as a teacher are testimony to your genuine concern for the education of West Virginia’s teachers and students.”
The Honorable Cliff Moore, member of the West Virginia House of Delegates, provided inspirational instructions to the candidates, saying, in part, “Use ‘what you’ve got,’ network to get work, don’t be afraid to ask, and look the part.” He also admonished the candidates to continue to read after graduation.
R.T. “Ted” Rogers, chair of the Concord University Board of Governors, congratulated the candidates for completing their requirements for graduation. “We’re proud of you,” he said.
“How did you get here?” asked Hugh A. Campbell, professor of education and president of the faculty. “Boil it down to one word, character. Character is who you are when no one is looking.”
David A. Barnette ‘73, chair of the Concord University Foundation, brought greetings from the Foundation. He explained that the foundation is … “you,” [guests in audience] and encouraged the candidates and their friends and family to give back to the University, citing Mrs. Ruby Webb Carter as an example.
“Today is the day most of you have been waiting for,” stated Rosalie S. Peck ‘63, president of the Alumni Association. “No more—tuition and fees, no more—financial aid applications, no more—searching for a parking space, no more—homework assignments at 2 a.m. and no more—memories.” She then quoted a phrase from a book she read recently, “The best way to improve your team is to improve yourself.”
Sarah Suzanne Roy Hellems from Oak Hill, Heidi Lee Jackson from Sinks Grove, Andrea Michelle Kibler from St. Albans and Nelson Lee Smith from Crawley, valedictories to the University, provided inspirational comments to the candidates for graduation.
Vice President and Academic Dean, Dr. Dean Turner presented the candidates for graduation to the President. Carolyn Fluharty Cox, registrar of the University, presented the diplomas to the candidates.
