Princely Players to Perform at CU Monday, February 5

Athens, W.Va. – Concord University will present black a cappella group, the Princely Players, Monday, February 5 at 8 p.m. in the Alexander Fine Arts Center Main Theater.

The Princely Players represent the centuries old struggle for freedom by Africans in America through their music and dramatization. The Princely Players have been featured on National Public Radio and the BBC and have been heard on the Smithsonian’s “Wade in the Water” series and the Time-Life Civil War recordings.

The musical selections range from traditional spirituals like “Amazing Grace” and “Swing Low” to classical jazz such as Duke Ellington's “A-Train.” The ensemble performed in Michigan last year, when The Grand Rapids Press wrote, “The singers’ multipart harmonies, call-and-response techniques and beautiful descants transformed the folk repertoire with classical polish.”

The Princely Players have collaborated with other musicians such as Ladysmith Black Mambazo and the Nashville Symphony. The group has also recorded with other artists such as Randy Travis, Danny O’Keefe, Kathy Mattea, Tim O’Brien and Mindy Smith.

“The Princely Players didn't just give the audience a history lesson - they also provided exciting, gut-wrenching theater,” said The Nashville Scene.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for senior citizens and $2 for non-Concord students.
