CORRECTION: Harvard Professor and Author to Lecture at CU on Tuesday, April 24

Athens, W.Va. – Benjamin M. Friedman, professor of political economy and former chairman of the Department of Economics at Harvard University, will be presenting a lecture at Concord University on TUESDAY, April 24 at 11 a.m. in the Student Center Ballroom. (NOT Monday, April 23 as noted in the previous news release. We apologize for the error.) A question and answer session will follow. He will be discussing his book, The Moral Consequences of Economic Growth, which will be on sale 25 percent off of list price at a Concord University Bookstore special display on the day of the lecture.

In this book, Friedman examines the effects of economic growth and how rising incomes lead to more democratic societies. According to the summary on the book’s back cover, a plateau of wealth is dangerous in that “democratic values [are put] at risk when income levels stand still.” As a voice in the debate on globalization, Friedman gives solid suggestions for both national and international policies.

Friedman has taught at Harvard for more than three decades. One of his books, Day of Reckoning: The Consequences of American Economic Policy Under Reagan and After, received the George S. Eccles Prize, awarded annually for excellence in writing about economics. Friedman has written for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Review of Books. Most recently, he was the 2005 recipient of the John R. Commons Award, presented in recognition of achievements in economics and service to the economics profession. He and his wife Barbara and their two sons live in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
