Athens,
W.Va. – Amber McCoy, a first-year Concord University student from Wilmington, Del.,
has been awarded the 2007-08 David S. Roth Memorial Scholarship as the winner
of an annual writing competition open to all Concord students. McCoy is pursuing a B.S. Education
degree in Special Education.
Selected on
the basis of their outstanding writing skills, the finalists in this year's
competition represented a variety of academic majors and geographic areas:
Runner-up
was Ashleigh Glass (history with an emphasis in philosophy) of New
Cumberland. Honorable mention was
awarded to Jessica Boggs (athletic training) of Parkersburg. The other
finalists were Katie Litchfield (business management) of Apple Grove; Erin
McClung (elementary education) of Mt. Lookout; Cynthia Stover (chemistry/biology)
of Greenville; and Derek White (English education 5-adult) of Princeton.
The Roth
Scholarship honors the memory of Professor David S. Roth, who taught English
and journalism at Concord University from 1969 until 1986. Dr. Roth's wide-ranging interests and
enthusiasm for teaching writing inspired his family and colleagues to establish
the David S. Roth Memorial Scholarship Fund.
