20^th Annual Homer K. Ball Golf Tourney Slated for Friday, June 13

Athens, W.Va. – Concord University will be holding the 20^th annual Concord University Foundation Homer K. Ball Scholarship Golf Tournament on Friday, June 13, 2008, at the beautiful 18-hole course at Pipestem Resort State Park. Participants will be helping some of the state’s best students receive a Concord education, since all funds, after expenses, will be applied to the CU Foundation’s scholarship fund.

Tee time for the tournament will be Friday the 13^th at 8:30 a.m., and lunch will be served immediately following the tournament at the picnic shelter below the golf course parking lot. The cost is $125 per person and includes lunch, green fees, cart, and tournament souvenirs. Drawings include a grand prize of a two-day stay for two at The Greenbrier, plus many other great prizes. Murphy Insurance will be providing a cash prize of $15,000 to the first hole-in-one on the eighth hole.

Scholarships for Concord University students are at the heart of this annual golfing event. For the past 19 years, funds from the golf tournament have been earmarked for student scholarships. Concord’s scholarship program ranks among the best in West Virginia’s small, public colleges. More than 75 percent of the student body receives some form of financial assistance from Concord through the Concord Foundation, federal and state sources, and other scholarship funds.

The event is named for Homer Ball, one of Concord’s most respected alumni and a 1948 graduate. He is a retired director of the physical plant at Concord, a former sheriff of Mercer County, and a former West Virginia State Senator. An active man, Ball can often be found playing golf on the Pipestem course or working for Habitat for Humanity and his church.
