STUDENT GOVERNMENT ORGANIZATIONS AND INTEREST CLUBS
The Student Government Association (SGA): is the authorized representative of the student body of Concord University. The Student Government Association seeks to keep communications open among the administration, faculty, and student body. It also functions to help coordinate activities of various campus organizations and to promote all areas of campus student life.
Student Government Association - Board of Directors: Purpose: serves as the Legislative branch of Student Government. The Board oversees student organization budgeting; makes resolutions, recommendations, and policy statements concerning the student as a part of the total academic community in relationship to the Student Government Administration; approves or disapproves any appointment of the SGA President; forms such committees as it deems necessary to function in an efficient manner; and recommends Student Activity Fees. Membership: The President, Vice President, Senators, and Organizational Representatives of the Board of Directors are elected in an at-large election by the student body. The Student Government Association President and Vice President are voting members of the Board of Directors.
Judicial Branch: Purpose: to provide an effective, consistent, and fair system of student discipline with students being heard by their peers; to interpret the Student Government Association Constitution; to carry out impeachment trials of elected officials; and to carry out elections. Membership: All justices are appointed by the Student Government Association President and must be approved by the Student Government Association Board of
Directors.
Interest Clubs Include:
Art and Theater Society: Purpose: to promote interest in and knowledge of the arts. Students involved in the class portion of this organization participate in a trip to New York City to view art in museums and galleries. Membership: Open to all Concord University students. (For class portion, preference shown towards art majors.)
Alpha Psi Omega: Purpose: Alpha Psi Omega is an honorary national theatre fraternity, which recruits members on a point-based system, for artistic talent and merit. We produce shows, do community service, and promote theatre. Membership: To complete a standard application form showing that they have participated in dramatic activities worth a total of at least 50 points, as determined by a point system to be approved by an
active member.
Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority: Purpose: a women’s organization founded at Longwood College on November 15, 1901. Its mission is “to develop women of poise and purpose.” The Beta Pi Chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha was founded on Concord’s campus in 1947. Our well-known mascots are Raggedy Ann and the Ladybug, and our colors are Crimson Red and Pearl White. We are not only active on campus, but also within the community through our philanthropies, which include the Special Olympics and The S. June Smith Center, (a center for developmentally handicapped children). Our close bonds and special friendships offer every one of us a strong support system in our home away from home. Membership: all interested women must have at least a 2.3 GPA, and be a full time university student.
Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority: Purpose: Alpha Sigma Tau is among the oldest organizations on campus. We are very active on campus, as well as within the community. Philanthropy is a big part of our organization with recipients of our work ranging from Pine Mountain Settlement School to the American Diabetes Association. Our tight-knit sisterhood offers each and every one of us a strong support system away from home. Membership: one must have at least a 2.3 GPA, attend all required meetings, 6-8 week pledge period, participate in philanthropy, at least 80% on pledge exam, pay all dues, and complete pledge period satisfactorily.

Baptist Campus Ministries: Purpose: to share the gospel and provide opportunities for Bible study, worship, prayer, and small group relationships to enhance the growth of students as disciples of Jesus Christ. Membership: all are welcome.
Baptist Student Union: Purpose: The Baptist Student Union is a student led organization that seeks to provide opportunities for students of all faiths to enjoy Christian fellowship. The BSU promotes spiritual growth through weekly Bible study meetings and encouraging students to be involved in the local church of their choice. The BSU also provides opportunities for community involvement through special projects and outreach teams. Membership: anyone may attend.
Black Student Union: Purpose: The Black Student Union is an organization open to all Concord University Students who would like to help promote unity among Black Students on campus and help serve minority interests. Our group is dedicated to helping Black Students succeed in their university careers, finding safe and fun ways for these students to get involved in campus life, and encouraging cooperation between groups of all races, religions, and cultural backgrounds. We work towards raising issues at Concord that concern Black students, faculty, and staff, and our goal is to continually present a positive example of Black youth from all nations. Membership: open to all Concord University students.
Campus Crusade for Christ: Purpose: to help students discover how God relates to their lives. Membership: anyone may attend.
Christ Gospel Ministries: Purpose: Christ Gospel Ministries (CGM) is a campus Christian organization. The focus of our ministry is to promote spiritual growth in the LORD Jesus Christ. Some of our group activities include weekly meetings, Bible studies, singing and social events, guest speakers, and concerts.
Circle K: Purpose: To offer students an opportunity to build leadership skills, build friendships, and serve the local and world-wide communities. Membership: Any student who can uphold the objects of Circle K International Service; leadership & fellowship, and who is officially enrolled at Concord University.
Concord Art Society: Purpose: this organization shall be to promote an understanding, appreciation, and involvement of the Concord University community in the fine arts and the computer graphics arts. The organization shall offer student opportunities for learning through viewing art exhibitions and participating in constructive critiques of their own art and that of others. Membership: Any student member of faculty, or member of staff may be a member of the Concord Art Society. Those who attend trips are expected to help out with fundraisers.
Concord Dance Ensemble: Purpose: to provide a means for students to participate in a performing dance organization, allowing student opportunity to perform classical dance, teach classes, and choreograph dance pieces. Membership: any student is eligible for membership, regardless of dance experience.
Concord Film Society: Purpose: Concord Film Society brings rare, classic, and foreign films to the university weekly. Concord is one of the only universities with a program like CFS; we encourage everyone to take advantage of these scintillating works of art and the unique cultural, educational, and sensual experiences CFS offers. Membership: admission is free to all members of the community; cultural credit is available.
Concord Investment Club (CIC): Purpose: The goal of the CIC is to provide members with practical, real-world investment experience. Members will obtain a fundamental knowledge of financial markets and express that knowledge by managing an actual portfolio of stocks, consisting in part, of each member’s invested funds. Students receive one hour of academic credit graded as pass or fail. Membership: The CIC is open to any student enrolled at Concord University desiring to gain meaningful investment experience. There is no prerequisite, and all academic disciplines are accepted.
Concord Outdoor Club: Purpose: to promote interest in outdoor recreation. Membership: open to all interested students, faculty and staff.
Concord Residence Hall Councils: Purpose: Each Residence Hall Council directs the affairs of that Residence Hall in defining privileges, obligations, and rights of the students residing there; promotes and implements social activities for the Hall; and acts in the capacity of student advisors promoting the best interest of the individual, hall and University. Membership: Open to all students
of the hall (usually includes a membership fee). Members are elected to represent specific sections of the Hall.
Concord University Intramurals: Purpose: to offer an organized, structured and unstructured program of sports and activities and to encourage the active participation of students, faculty, and staff. Sports include tennis, flag football, soccer, badminton, racquetball, water polo, volleyball, swimming, golf, basketball, archery, softball, bowling, tug of war, and team racquetball. Membership: Open to all registered students (6 semester hours required for structured Intramurals), faculty, staff, and spouses of students, faculty and staff.
Concord University Student Commuters’ Committee Located in the Student Center Game Room. The purpose of “The Concord University Student Commuters’ Committee”, will be to assist those commuting Concord University students with any complications, problems, needs, demands, and inquiries to better promote the general welfare of commuters. Membership: All commuters welcome.
Delta Zeta Sorority: Purpose: to unite its members in the bonds of sincere and lasting friendship, to stimulate one another in the pursuit of knowledge, to promote the moral and social culture of its members, and to develop plans for guidance and unity in action. Our colors are rose and green and our mascot is the turtle. Delta Zeta is the second largest national sorority and is always growing. We work hard to raise money for our philanthropy which is the speech and hearing impaired. Our members are very active and participate in many other organizations on campus. Membership: members shall be chosen for moral, social and intellectual worth. All ladies that are interested must have at least a 2.5 GPA. Membership shall not be denied because of race, color, religion, national origin or handicap.
The ECO Club: Purpose: to create a more aesthetically, pleasing, and clean environment in which to interact with. Furthermore to improve the status of our environment through recycling and of course to have fun at the same time. Membership: All are welcome.
Gamma Beta Phi: Purpose: Gamma Beta Phi is an organization that encourages scholastic achievement, promotes advancement of educational ideas, rewards academic merit among college students and completes service projects in the community. Membership: students having completed at least twelve credit hours of college
work and having a GPA of at least 3.0 will be invited to join this organization.

Geography Club: (GEO Club) Purpose: to provide students in Geography with the opportunity to meet on a regular basis. At these meetings, students will discuss geographic issues and studies, become involved with the Concord University Community and surrounding area, work to acquire information for members and others about employment opportunities in Geography, and provide information and assistance to students wishing to pursue graduate studies in Geography. Membership: open to all Concord University students. Five ($5.00) dues.
Human Performance: Purpose: to increase awareness of the importance of good health and physical fitness through student involvement in the community and aspiring to help promote healthy living throughout our region. Membership: those interested in the four disciplines of physical education including: Athletic Training, Health, Physical Education, and Sports Management.
Honors Program: Purpose: to provide academic and cultural enrichment to high achieving students who want to complement their intellectual development beyond the ordinary classroom experience with other similarly motivated students. Membership: open to incoming freshmen with a 3.5 high school GPA and 26 ACT/1170 SAT, and to enrolled/transfer students with a 3.5 GPA and less than 78 hours credit.
International Students Club: Purpose: our goal is promote diversity to the campus. It also gives the students a chance to meet people from different cultures. Making international students feel at home while attending Concord is one of our larger goals. Membership: our club is open to all students and faculty of Concord University.
Lady Eights: Purpose: Our organization’s goal is to provide an environment where women are encouraged to be independent. We participate in charity events and provide entertainment for the university community. There is no GPA requirement to be in the group; however, you must be a Concord student. Lady Eights stand for Independence and the right to have your own opinion. Membership: the only membership requirement is that you have the heart and will to be a Lady Eight.
Concord Linux Users Group: Purpose: of C-Lug is to educate, advocate, and support the users of free public software, such as Linux/Unix. Membership: Anyone with an interest in computers is welcome to attend the meetings.
Mu Xi Phi: Purpose: Mu Xi Phi is a local fraternity established in 1996. The purpose of this organization is to promote brotherhood, to educate each other on life’s challenges, and to form friendships that extend beyond your collegiate career. As a local fraternity we stress community service in the Athens/Princeton area. finally it’s all about being you. Membership: membership requirements include being a full-time male student at Concord University and possessing the same ideals as the organization.
Newman Club: Purpose: The Newman Club provides an opportunity for Catholic worship for students and members of the surrounding community. Church services are offered during the academic year on Sundays at 6:00 p.m. at the Newman Center on East Vermillion Street.
Nu Zeta Chi: Purpose: To bring diverse women together who want to make a difference and have a good time. Membership: Open to all women with a 2.2 GPA.
Phi Alpha Delta: Purpose: Phi Alpha Delta is a nation-wide pre-law fraternity. Its purpose is to enable members to get ready for law school and/or legal education. Membership: all Concord students are eligible, irrespective of major.
Phi Beta Lambda: Purpose: encourages extracurricular education, development of leadership skills, and community service on Concord University’s campus. We also promote the awareness and knowledge of business in today’s world among
college students. Membership: open to business and TIM majors who meet the GPA requirement, and are serious about expanding their experience in the business world.
Phi Sigma Phi: Purpose: Phi Sigma Phi National Fraternity is an organization dedicated to the ideals of intelligence and brotherhood. Like the Phoenix, the mascot of Phi Sigma Phi, our fraternity has risen from the ashes, so rose Phi Sigma Phi from our former organization Phi Sigma Epsilon. It is our purpose now to create, promote, and enhance higher education among college men. Membership: We are looking for quality young men who possess strong character and have a steadfast dedication to excellence.
Pi Kappa Phi: Purpose: Pi Kappa Phi is a fraternal organization for young university students. Pi Kappa Phi exhibits a band of brotherhood amongst its members. It also helps build better men more equipped for the real world and university life by promoting responsibilities and standards to uphold by our tradition that spans almost a century. There are more reasons that make Pi Kappa Phi America’s leading fraternity. Membership: any male with full time status at the university is eligible to be selected for membership.
Psi Chi: Purpose: Psi Chi is a national honor society whose purpose shall be to encourage, stimulate, and maintain excellence in scholarship of the individual members of all fields, particularly in psychology, and to advance the science of psychology. Membership: membership in the Society is open to qualified, candidates of any age, sex, sexual orientation, race, handicap or disability, color, religion, and national and ethnic origin.
Reflexes: Purpose: is the campus literary magazine, and serves as an outlet for students with writing or artistic talents. Membership: open to all students.
Sam Club: The Society for Advancement of Management is a club that targets both business and non-business students to learn management skills that can be used in their careers.
Student Activities Committee (SAC): Purpose: SAC provides many opportunities for students to become involved in all aspects of programming. Students have the opportunity to attend
conferences, select entertainers and produce the programs. They also gain experience in leadership, decision making and responsibility. SAC has won numerous Excellence in Programming Awards from the National Association of Campus Activities (Great Lakes Region). Membership: open to all students.
Sig Tau Gamma Fraternity: Purpose: The gentlemen of Sigma Tau Gamma are the oldest fraternity on Concord University Campus. Since May 7, 1949, we have prided ourselves on our high beliefs of Value, Learning, Leadership, Excellence, Benefit, and integrity. Membership: there shall be three classes of membership in this Fraternity: collegiate, alumni and honorary.
Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority: Purpose: We are philanthropic sorority as well as social. We sponsor the Robbie Page memorial in Dallas TX and Chapel Hill NC. We are recognized nationally. We have chapters all over the United States, including Alaska. We are the only national sorority to have a totally deaf chapter (located in New York.) We also have a chapter in Germany. We are the oldest sorority on Concord’s campus being founded nationally in 1898 and locally in 1925. We exist to develop strong womanly character and unite in sisterhood. Membership: In order to be considered for membership you must have a GPA of 2.4 and be a full time student.
Social Work Organization: Purpose: to provide an organization through which members can coordinate their interests and act cooperatively on behalf of all social work students, practitioners, and those who serve the community at large. Membership: open to all members of the university
community.
Student Organization for Understanding Politics (SOUP): Purpose: SOUP is the Student Organization for Understanding Politics. We sponsor debates, and hold an annual voter
registration drive. Membership: all concerned and politically minded students and faculty.
Tau Kappa Epsilon: Purpose: to aid in the intellectual, social, and scholastic development of its members, to foster the ideals of love, charity, and esteem in its members, and to aid and support Concord University in its academic goals. Membership: undergraduate men who are found to be of upstanding honor and character.
University Republicans: Purpose: the idea of the organization is to promote conservative ideas and leadership throughout both the university and surrounding community. Membership provides several opportunities for students interested in political trips, volunteerism, campaign support, and political speakers. Members are given several wonderful opportunities for students to network with both political and private leaders of the community and
nation! Membership: The University Republicans have open membership to all students enrolled at Concord University.
WCUR (Concord Radio): Purpose: to provide the listener with musical entertainment, talk shows, news, sports, weather, and special remote broadcasts. Students gain valuable knowledge concerning the operation of a radio station to “hands-on” work experience. Membership: the class that encompasses the staff members is CART 210, Communication Workshop. All staff
members must work five hours per week, attend designated meetings, and receive a satisfactory evaluation to receive the one-hour credit.
Wiccan Magickal Organization of Neopaganism (Wiccan M.O.O.N.): Purpose: This organization’s purpose is to inform the public about the truth of what Wicca and the meaning of its religious beliefs as well as dispersing stereotypes about Wiccans. It is also to work as a community for Wiccans and their supporters to meet others of like minds and to celebrate Wicca with others of that religion. Wiccan M.O.O.N. is not to work as a coven, but be a meeting place to find others who may want to start one aside from it. Membership: includes anyone who is a Concord University student, faculty and staff, and members of the surrounding community. To be a member one has to be Wiccan or support it as a religion that deserves the same rights and respect as any other religion. Members also have to pay $5.00 in dues a semester.
Wilson Hall Academic Council: Purpose: Wilson Hall Academic Council is a group of students meeting once a week; they do service projects, fundraisers, and often go on academic trips. Membership: anyone who is a Concord student is eligible for membership.
WMLT (Mountain Lion Television): Purpose: to provide the viewer with locally produced newscasts, interview programs, sporting events, musical recitals and concerts, and other programs of the university community interest. Membership: The class that encompasses the production crew members is CART 210, “Communication Workshop”.
