Dr. Peter L. Viscusi
Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs
Dr. Peter L. Viscusi, Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs, received his B.A. from La Salle College in Philadelphia, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in History from the University of Delaware.
Before coming to Concord University, Dr. Viscusi served as Vice President for Academic Affairs at Elmira College in Elmira, New York. Prior to his service at Elmira College, Dr. Viscusi was the Assistant Provost for Undergraduate Studies and Dean of The Honors College at the University of Central Missouri.
Dr. Cheryl Barnes
Dr. Barnes was appointed as Associate Provost in summer 2013. She has been an education professor at Concord since 1998. Dr. Barnes’ administrative experience includes Interim Director of Graduate Studies (2008-2012), Educational Graduate Program Coordinator (2012-2015), Chair of the Division of Education (2012-2014) Regents Bachelor of Arts (RBA) Coordinator (2013 – present) and Director of Graduate Studies (2014-present).
In 1978, Dr. Barnes graduated with a B.S. in Elementary Education with a Specialization in Early Childhood Education (NK-8) from Concord College. She then attended Marshall University’s College of Graduate Studies and received an M.A. in Elementary Education with a Specialization in Early Childhood Education (1984) and an M.A. in Educational Administration (1992). Dr. Barnes completed her Ph.D. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Curriculum and Instruction with a Cognate in Technology (2004).
Dr. Barnes has taught undergraduate courses in early childhood education, assessment and evaluation, educational psychology, and technology at Concord University. She has also taught technology, assessment and evaluation, and research courses at the graduate level. Dr. Barnes was an elementary teacher in Wyoming County for 20 years, teaching Kindergarten and second grade (1978-1998) and served as assistant to the Principal at Berlin McKinney Elementary school for six years (1992-98) before coming to Concord.
Dr. Barnes’ scholarship includes the creation of the Master of Arts (MAT) in Education Program. As the Interim Director of Graduate Programs, she also assisted in the writing, submission, and gaining approval of the Master of Arts in Health Promotion, the Master of Education in Special Education, and the Master of Social Work Programs. She has been active in several educational and technology associations and has served as an NCATE and CAR program reviewer.
At Concord, Dr. Barnes has chaired and served on a wide range of committees, prepared assessment reports for the M. Ed. and MAT programs, and assisted with the NCATE and HLC accreditation processes. She was appointed by the HECP to serve on the West Virginia Program Review Board. Dr. Barnes is currently Concord University’s Accreditation Liaison Officer (ALO) for the Higher Learning Commission and responsible for the West Virginia Higher Education Policy 2013-18 Commission Master Plan and Compact Update.
She and her husband, Tim, reside in Princeton, WV and have three daughters, three sons, one son-in-law, one daughter-in-law, and five grandchildren.
Dr. Kathryn Liptak
Assistant Provost and Director of University Assessment
Dr. Kathryn Liptak, Assistant Provost and Director of University Assessment, holds a B.S. in Elementary Education (1-6) with a specialization in Language Arts (4-8), a Master of Arts in Secondary Education with a specialization in Middle Childhood Education from West Virginia University, and an Ed. D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Virginia Polytechnic and State University.
Dr. Liptak joined the faculty at Concord University in 2000 as professor and chair of education. Prior to that she served as a faculty member and chair of education at Wesley College in Dover, DE, a faculty member at the University of Kentucky, and an elementary and middle school teacher in Fayette County, West Virginia.
