Division of Fine Arts
Ensembles are open to all students at the university and represent multiple disciplines of study. Please check room M115 in the Alexander Fine Arts Building for details.
The Commanders is Concord's select jazz ensemble. The ensemble meets during the Fall and Spring Semesters. A traditional big band ensemble, the Commanders perform a variety of music from swing to modern jazz compositions. The band performs several concerts annually, with past venues including the Greenbrier Resort in Lewisburg, WV, and the Pipestem Resort State Park. In addition, the Commanders travel to various public schools throughout Virginia and West Virginia, representing Concord University and the music department.
The Concord University Marching Band performs at all home football games and select away games and participates in multiple parades throughout the year. The Pride is the featured band at the annual Manassas, VA Christmas Parade and a perennial favorite at the Welch, WV Veteran’s Day Parade. The group performs a wide variety of charts including jazz, rock, pop, and classical.
The Pep Band is the University’s high energy Basketball Band performing at all home games and select away games and playoffs. Like the Pride Marching Band the group performs a diverse group of musical styles.
Symphonic Band is a large wind and percussion ensemble, performing classics of the band repertoire as well as modern literature. This ensemble meets during the Spring Semester, and performs two concerts as well as fall and spring commencements. Symphonic Band regularly features guest artists. We have been fortunate to feature Denis Askew on Tuba and Ed Bach on Trumpet in the past. On alternating years the band does a performance trip and has traveled to New York City and Orlando.
The ensemble has seating auditions in the fall semester.
The Concord Percussion Ensemble is under the direction of Casey Cangelosi -2009 to present. Performances are held in the Oakey Alexander Theater in Fine Arts Center. The percussion ensemble has performed a variety of musical repertoire from authentic hand drumming to the music of John Cage. The ensemble has also premiered new compositions from students and faculty alike. Members of the ensemble teach locally in the surrounding public schools and participate in volunteer outreach performances. Please check the Fine Arts Calendar for concert dates and information.
The Collegiate Choir is an ensemble, open to all college students, that performs a wide variety of a capella and accompanied choral literature. This choir performs two concerts a semester both on the CU Campus, and surrounding areas. The ensemble also focuses on collaboration within the department of Fine Arts, and with local composers.
ConChords (Chamber Singers)
This elite chamber group features both applied voice majors and non-music majors. Interested students must successfully complete a rigorous audition process each Spring for the following Fall and Spring Semesters. The men and women of this group break-off to perform acapella music from the Barber-Shop and Sweet Adelines genre as well as contemporary literature. The ConChords are the premier performing group of Concord University, and sing on tour within the states and internationally.
