The Concord University Honors Program provides students with high achievement special opportunities to enrich their Concord education. Honors students are encouraged to take an active part in shaping their own education, both in and outside the classroom. This is done by helping students design their own course enhancements and by making more extensive use of the opportunities for independent study and research which the University provides. Honors students also enjoy the opportunity to interact with fellow achievers, both in the Honors courses and on a daily basis in the Honors Residence Area. In addition, students who successfully complete the Honors Program are distinguished as Honors Graduates. They receive special recognition at commencement and "Honors Graduate" appears on all transcripts and diplomas. A cover letter detailing the nature of this achievement will be sent to potential employers or graduate schools along with the transcript.
Admission
- Eligibility
Students are considered for admission into the Honors Program based on ACT or SAT scores and high school GPA. Entering freshmen need a score of 26 on the ACT composite, or 1170 on the SAT, and a GPA of 3.5 or above from high school. Please note that only those who have applied for admission to Concord University will be considered.Transfer students, or enrolled Concord students who have less than 78 hours of University credit, need a GPA of 3.5 for entry into the program. Students with 78+ hours of University credit are not eligible for admission to the program.
- Requirements
All Honors students must successfully complete 13 hours of Honors courses. These courses consist of HON 101, HON 401, and nine hours of independent study or enhanced Concord courses with Honors designation.HON 101 is a one-credit course designed to acquaint students with the nature of a liberal arts education. HON 401 is a "capstone" seminar open only to Honors students within one year of graduation.
The remaining nine hours are earned in Concord courses enhanced for Honors designation, or Honors Independent Study projects. Students select the courses for enhancement and in consultation with the instructor and the Honors Coordinator design their project.
To remain in the Honors Program, students must achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher in courses taken at Concord at the completion of 30 hours of Concord credit (approximately the end of the Freshman year) and maintain that GPA through graduation.

Enrichment Point System
In order to encourage students to be active members of the Honors Program and the campus community, students enrolled in the Honors Program should keep a simple portfolio documenting their participation in the program and in the campus community. Students need to attain at least 54 points per year in order to remain in good standing in the program. Students who attain less than 54 points in a given year are placed on probationary status, and must attain at least 23 enrichment points in the following semester to avoid dismissal from the program. In order to participate in priority registration, Honors students must attain at least 18 points per semester. Points are acquired by attending events offered by the Honors Program or other campus organizations. Honors students may receive enrichment points by repeating any recurring event 3 times per semester.
Portfolios must be made available to the Honors Coordinator within 24 hours of a request. It is assumed that a student who does not provide his or her portfolio within 24 hours of a request has earned zero enrichment points for the semester.
In preparing the portfolio, Honors students will abide by the university Honor Code that originated from Honors students:
"As a member of the Concord University Community I will act with honesty and integrity in accordance with our fundamental principles and I will respect myself and others while challenging them to do the same."
