Erma Byrd Higher Education Center Inclement Weather Policy

The Inclement Weather Policy for the Erma Byrd Higher Education Center is two-fold.  The announcement of approved Center closings for inclement weather conditions will affect scheduled classes at the Center.  On the other hand, the announcement of specific institutional closings for inclement weather conditions may or may not affect scheduled classes held at the Center.

Residential Colleges and Universities

In the event that there are extreme weather conditions and the partnering educational institutions represented at the Center make the decision to delay, cancel or close their institutions, announcement of such information will be made in accordance to respective institutional policies.  If a decision is made to call Inclement Weather, the Inclement Weather Class Schedule should be followed.

Please click on the following institution at which you are enrolled for the Inclement Weather Class Schedule information:

1.  Bluefield State College Inclement Weather Class Schedule

2.  Concord University Inclement Weather Class Schedule

Concord University utilizes three statuses during Inclement Weather as follows:

  • University Closed:  No students or employees are to report.
  • Classes Cancelled:  Students DO NOT REPORT; but, employees are expected to work their normal time.
  • Operating on an Inclement Weather Delay:  Under this status, all 8:00 a.m. classes will start at 10:00 a.m., and then students and faculty must follow the Concord University Inclement Weather Schedule.

3.  Marshall University Inclement Weather Policy

To ensure that students receive announcements of class delays, cancellations or closings from their respective institutions, it is highly recommended that Center students register with their respective institutional emergency notification system (i.e., MyMU for Marshall University, MyCU for Emergency Alerts at Concord University, or BSC Alert for Bluefield State College).  To receive such information, students are encouraged to contact their respective institutional offices located at the Center as follows:

  • Bluefield State College       304-255-5812 or 304-929-5458
  • Concord University             304-384-5614 (This is an automated system for the Concord University Beckley Center; so, please listen to the options listed and press the corresponding number.  For immediate assistance, press "0.")
  • Marshall University             304-256-0266, Ext. 1

More importantly, safety is a first priority; therefore, please use your best judgment when making the decision to drive to the Center.  If for any reason that you cannot make it to class due to inclement weather, it is recommended that you notify your Instructor(s) and work with your respective institutions to make up missed work.

Erma Byrd Higher Education Center

It is the goal of the Erma Byrd Higher Education Center to remain open except in extreme weather conditions such as severe snow, ice, flooding, power outages, etc.  In the event that a decision is made (and approved by The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission) to close the Center due to extreme weather conditions, announcements will be officially made to the news media for dissemination to the public.  If you hear an announcement that “Erma Byrd Higher Education Center is Closed,” all activities and operations associated with the Center are canceled and the Center is closed.   Announcement of such closing will be broadcast on the following media stations:

  • WOAY TV

  • WVNS TV

  • WJLS Radio

  • Southern Communications (WCIR, WWNR, WTNJ and Groovy 94)

  • WVVA TV (Bluefield, Beckley, Lewisburg, Richlands, Pineville, Welch)

  • WOWK TV

  • WSAZ TV

Additionally, during times of inclement weather, the status of Center operations may vary from time to time due to changes in weather patterns and/or successful snow/ice removal efforts around the Center and the roads.  The Center will assess its ability to remain open or to close throughout the day by monitoring the weather and road conditions.  Closing announcements will be officially made to the news media for dissemination to the public on the same media stations mentioned above and will be issued as follows:

  1. Notice of closings for Center day operations (which means day classes will be cancelled) will occur at 5:00 a.m.

  2. Notice of closings for Center day operations (which means day classes will be cancelled) will occur at 5:00 a.m.

In the event day operations are cancelled but evening operations are open, the Center’s educational institutions are responsible for making arrangements to notify their students of changes in their respective class meetings.  In the event that day operations are open and night operations are cancelled, the Center’s educational institutions are responsible for making arrangements to notify their students of changes in their respective class meetings.  To receive such information, students are encouraged to contact their respective institutional offices located at the Center as follows:
