Professor Berkey's main field of study is the American Civil War. His dissertation examined how civilians in Virginia’s lower Shenandoah Valley coped with the complex challenges posed by living in a contested border region during the war. He is in the process of revising his dissertation for publication. Future projects include writing a chapter on Confederate women in a collection of essays on the Shenandoah Valley in the Civil War, and editing a manuscript on borderlands in the American Civil War.
