SIFE and Alpha Chi Present Speaker at Concord College
Athens, W.Va. - The Concord College chapters of the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) and the Alpha Chi Honor Society will jointly sponsor a speaker on campus on April 17, 2000. Mr. Richard B. Duke, President and CEO of A/Z Tech, Inc. will discuss the relationship of a college education to the entrepreneurial process at 11:00 a.m. in Room 320 of the College’s Marsh (Administration) Building.
Duke’s firm manufactures test equipment for the magnet wire industry. His company, A/Z Technology, Inc., designs and builds test equipment for such leaders of the magnet wire drawing industry as REA Magnet Wire, Superior Essex Corporation and Phelps-Dodge. With A/Z Tech test instruments, these manufacturers determine properties of their product such as dielectric properties, or conductivity. In addition to his American customers, Duke sells equipment to major firms all over the world.
A native of Marion, Ind., Duke played collegiate baseball and basketball at Miami University of Ohio, where he completed his A. B. degree. After college, he worked in sales and college admissions before accepting a position as the Director of Research and Development at the Indiana Institute of Technology in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He led the R&D Department of Indiana Tech for over 15 years before purchasing the company he now manages. His diverse career has given him many opportunities to reflect upon how his collegiate education has affected his performance and success as a practicing businessman, and Duke shares his experiences in his talks to college students.
SIFE Founded by Sam Walton
Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) is a national organization of entrepreneurial students. Sam Walton, founder of the Wal-Mart Corporation, founded the organization. SIFE strives to foster interest in entrepreneurship, in part, by bringing experienced business speakers to the campuses where it has chapters. The Alpha Chi Honor Society is a Greek letter, national collegiate honor society. Concord’s Alpha Chi Society has been in existence since 1969. Alpha Chi sponsors one scholarly event a year on its member campuses. "Both organizations are excited at the prospect of Richard Duke’s address at Concord," stated Stephen Rowe, sponsor of Alpha Chi. "Students and the general public are invited, and there is no admission fee," said Dr. Jeffrey Woods, SIFE sponsor.
