Concord Students Organizing Relief for Victims of Indian Earthquake
Athens, W.Va. - International students who attend Concord College are organizing a fundraising drive to help victims of the earthquake that stuck northwestern India on January 26, 2001. Millions are homeless and thousands perished in the natural disaster.
The drive is being coordinated by 15 Concord students, Human Resources Director Debbie Curry and International Student Advisor Nancy Ellison. Students hope to raise $3,000 from donations.
Concord senior and social work major Dean Ratzlaff said, “I have made some great friends from India here at Concord. In these times of great need, India needs our help.” Concord senior from India, Jatin Atre said, “Southern West Virginia can be truly described as ‘beautiful places, smiling faces.’ The people are exceptionally friendly and supportive. I am sure that during this time of India's need they will extend their kind cooperation.”
The College will observe a minute of silence on Wednesday, February 7 at 11:15 a.m., then the Concord carillon will toll in memory of the victims.
President Jerry Beasley said that southern West Virginia has a deep-rooted connection with India as many of its leading citizens come from India. He added that many of Concord's exceptional students are from India too. “Southern West Virginia has benefited from the synthesis with Indian students, doctors and professionals,” stated Beasley. “It is in this time of need that we must help our friends.”
The international students will also be holding a charity car wash in the parking lot of BB&T Bank in Athens. A bake sale will be held at Concord's Athens campus and also at the College’s Beckley Center. Details on these events will be announced at a later date.
Friends who wish to contribute can do so via the donation boxes on campus or by making checks payable to the Concord College Foundation, Inc. Please note India Relief in the memo line of your check.
