Concord Faculty and Students Celebrate Social Work Month
Athens, W.Va. - Dr. John David Smith, director of the Concord College social work department, Bonnie Dorsey, coordinator of the Social Work Month celebration, and Ms. Sarah Whittaker and Dr. Ellen Darden, social work faculty are pleased to announce the following activities:
Monday, March 4, 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., Marsh Hall, Room 107: The general public is invited to an open house and reception in the social work department. Displays will showcase select social work projects. Concord faculty and representatives of community social service agencies will be available for questions and comments.
Tuesday, March 5, 12:30 p.m. -2:30 p.m., College Center State Room: Speakers will discuss empowerment issues. Speakers will be Jeanette Ratcliffe from the West Virginia Department of Vocational Rehabilitation in Princeton, WV; Lois Mann from the Women’s Resource Center in Beckley, WV, and Elizabeth Farrell from the WVU School of Medicine, Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry, William R. Sharpe Hospital in Weston, WV.
Wednesday, March 20, 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., College Center State Room: Speakers will discuss embracing diversity.
Wednesday, March 27, 12:00 -2:00 p.m., College Center State Room: Speakers Robin Durham, President of the WV National Association of Social Workers and Counselor at the regional counseling center in Beckley, WV, and Jonathan Hutto of Amnesty International in Washington, D.C., will address social justice and social change.
"Social work is a diverse field from counseling, to policy making and implementation, to community organizing, to group work, to research, to resource brokerage and many other areas. This celebration only scratches the surface of the many types of jobs that someone in the social work field can do," stated Bonnie Dorsey, assistant professor of social work.
