9-11 Memorialized at Concord College, Service Will Be Wednesday Morning
Athens, W.Va. - Concord College will be hosting a memorial service on Wednesday, September 11, 8:30 a.m., on the lawn in front of Marsh Hall (administration building), facing the American flag. At 8:45 a.m., a moment of silence will be observed in conjunction with the public school system.
Gov. Bob Wise issued a proclamation ordering state flags displayed at half-staff on September 11, 2002, and Army Sergeant Jack Hurley will raise the American flag and then lower it to half-staff. Concord student Shannon Walls from Coal Mountain, West Virginia, will sing the national anthem. Invitations have been extended to all local emergency responders and the armed forces, to join Concord’s students, faculty and staff for the memorial service.
Speakers will include: Concord President Jerry Beasley, Concord Student Government Association President Abhishek Singh, Concord Vice President for Business & Finance Jim Cannon—the highest ranking military representative on campus—and Concord faculty member Dr. Paul Kane.
The carillon will play special music in memory of the victims of September 11.
After the service, refreshments will be served on the lawn in front of Marsh Hall. In case of inclement weather, the refreshments will be served on the second floor of Marsh Hall.
Donations Accepted in Honor of 9-11 Volunteers
Donations are being accepted on a quilt that will be given away on Wednesday, September 11, 2002, 9:15 a.m., room 101 in the Alexander Fine Arts Center Art Department.
Dr. Sheila Chipley’s spring 2002 art education class constructed the handmade quilt to honor the volunteers who contributed their time to the events of 9-11. Proceeds are going to the J. Arthur Butcher Art Award Fund. The handmade quilt is on display in the International Window on the ground floor of the College Center.
“We wanted to honor the volunteers who came together and helped people they did not know,” stated Dr. Chipley.
