Carillon Concert at Concord College, Tuesday, December 10
Athens, W.Va. - Holiday tunes will accent the Campus Beautiful, 6 p.m., Tuesday, December 10, as James A. “Jim” Bartlett performs his favorite tunes on the Grand Carillon at Concord College.
Mr. Bartlett received his Bachelor of Music degree in organ performance at the Conservatory of Music, University of Missouri, Kansas City, Missouri, and received his Master of Music degree in music composition at Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri. He is currently organist for the Memorial Baptist Church in Bluefield, Virginia, and teaches as an adjunct instructor at Concord College.
Mr. Bartlett will play traditional and Appalachian carols, dance songs and other popular seasonal tunes.
“Come hear familiar carols and festive music for the holidays,” stated Mr. Bartlett. “Stroll around the Concord campus or listen from the seating deck of the Alexander Fine Arts Building. Visitors may also view the carillon playing room in the carillon tower in Marsh Hall.”
Donated by former Concord President Joseph Marsh, Jr., the Marsh Memorial Carillon is West Virginia’s only true “grand” carillon and one of 120 “concert” carillons in the nation. Concord’s carillon consists of 48 bronze bells cast by the Paccard Founderie at Annecy, France, and was dedicated on the Athens campus in 1997.
Past guest carillonneurs at Concord College include Gerald Martindale, carillonneur for the Metropolitan United Church of Toronto, Canada; David Breneman of the Luray Singing Tower in Luray, Virginia, and John Courter from Berea College in Kentucky.
Admission is free and refreshments will be served on the deck of the Alexander Fine Arts Center. Jim Bartlett, director of programming at Concord encourages civic and church groups to attend. “There will be plenty of free parking,” he stated.
