Concord Students to Live in “Box City” … April 11, 12
Athens, W.Va. - On April 11 and 12, the Concord College Bonner Scholars, in conjunction with other campus organizations, are planning to host a “Box City” in an effort to raise funds for Scottie's Place.
Scottie's Place is an organization that provides homeless children with opportunities they otherwise would miss. During the summer, these children go to Scottie’s Place for a two-week camp experience. While staying there, children have a chance to do fun activities such as tree house building, mountain biking, arts and crafts, and swimming. They are given the opportunity to make friends and have fun. Located in Peterstown, W.Va., Scottie's Place has served children from Lewisburg, Beckley, and Charleston, as well as urban areas such as Charlotte, North Carolina, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C.
To build the Box City on campus, groups are asked to form teams and construct box homes to live in for 24 hours. Each team will then secure sponsors for their boxes. The date set for Box City is Friday, April 11 and Saturday, April 12. Boxes will be set up at 8 a.m. on Friday morning and taken down at 8 a.m. Saturday morning.
"We here at Concord College feel that Box City is a very worthwhile event because we are raising funds for children who do not often get the opportunities that Scottie's Place has to offer," stated Candace Daniel, project chair. Candace is from Gary, West Virginia, and is majoring in secondary teacher education, with an emphasis in English. Her anticipated graduation date is spring 2005.
"Scottie's Place is a wonderful organization, more than worthy of our hard work and dedication," stated Jalea Morgan, a Bonner Scholar at the College. Jalea is from Richwood, West Virginia, and is majoring in political science. Her anticipated graduation date is spring 2005.
"We are hoping for a lot of community involvement this year," stated Candace Daniel.
