16th Annual Homer Ball Golf Tourney—Students Win From Players Drives
Athens, W.Va. - Almost 100 golfers participated in the 16th annual Concord College Foundation / Homer K. Ball Scholarship Golf Tournament at Pipestem Resort State Park, Friday, June 11, 2004. The benefit tourney raised more than $11,000 for scholarships at Concord College.
The Golf Tournament is sponsored by the Concord College Foundation, which has provided scholarship support for Concord since 1966. Concord’s scholarship program ranks among the best in West Virginia’s public colleges.
Bill Baker, executive director for the Jobs Foundation said that, “The money from this golf tournament goes toward academic scholarships and it is important to support the college. Concord does an outstanding job of providing scholarships.”
“Concord is a good place to start your life!” noted Buck Parker with State Farm Insurance.
Bruce Williams, a retired businessman and former state senator said, “You want to support the school that was so good to you in your life.”
Committee members for the tournament included: Chairman Homer Ball and Sherry Brogan from Athens, W.Va.; Bart Harvey, Cecil Smith and Frank Wilkinson from Bluefield, W.Va.; Bill Baker from Daniels, W.Va.; Ken Collis, James (Dobber) McCabe, Charlie Mathena and Wanda White from Princeton, W.Va.
Rich Lowery with Murphy Insurance from Princeton sponsored a hole-in-one on the eighth hole with a $15,000 cash prize.
Hole sponsors were: Andy Clark Ford, The Dean Company, First Century Bank, Bart Harvey, Kitts Tire Service, Lloyd Jackson, John McCabe, New Peoples Bank, Princeton Health Care, Service Cleaners, Smith, Lilly and Ball, Stafford Consultants, Dr. James Allen White and Willis Chiropractic.
Benefactors were: Acordia, Aramark Dining Services, Central Printing, Charles T. "Chuck" Mathena Foundation and Murphy Insurance.
Door prizes were given away at a picnic held after the tournament.
The Greenbrier provided the grand prize of a two-day stay for two at the four-star resort. Terry Hughes from Princeton was the winner.
