Athens-Concord Town Social, Sunday, August 8—Award Recipients Announced
Athens, W.Va. –The 18th annual Athens-Concord Town Social will be Sunday, August 8, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the front lawn of the Concord University campus.
The Town Social Committee is pleased to announce that Robert C. Whittinghill has been selected as the recipient of the “2004 Total Community Involvement Award.” Mr. Whittinghill has served Concord University as a member of the faculty, faculty senate and as a representative on the statewide advisory board. He is a member of the Athens Lions Club and the Mercer County Fire Board.
Alice James Moore has been selected as the “Elder Citizen.” She is a descendent of one of the first families that settled in “Concord Church,” which was later re-named “Athens.”
Danny Ray Alvis, Contractor, has been selected to receive the “Business Longevity” award. Alvis began working in construction with his father when he was 16 in the late 1940s. Beginning 30 years ago, in 1974, he began his own construction company. He works in the Athens and Princeton communities.
The Marsh Memorial Carillon will be programmed by Mr. Jim Bartlett to play special music from 12:45-1:15 p.m.
“Billy Goat Gruff” has been added to the entertainment line-up. The tentative performance schedule is: 2-2:45 p.m., Midnight Ramblers; 3:15-4 p.m., Billy Goat Gruff, and 4:15-5 p.m., Sarcus.
The Town Social Committee encourages vendors to submit their applications as soon as possible.
The Committee would like to thank Concord University student intern, Laura Taylor from Madison, Va., for designing the t-shirt that will be sold at this year’s Town Social. Cost is $10 per shirt, and the funds collected will be used for scholarships for students attending Concord University.
BB&T and First Community Bank, with branches in Athens, are sponsoring the gifts that will be given to attendees on a first-come, first-serve basis, as well as the t-shirts.
