Commanders to Perform, Monday, April 24
Athens, W.Va. - The Commanders, a select jazz ensemble at Concord University, will kick off this year’s Spring Fling by presenting a free concert Monday, April 24 at 8 p.m. in the Ballroom, located in the Student Center at Concord University.
The ensemble, under the direction of Charles W. “Chuck” Pickeral, will feature works by some of jazz’s greatest historical figures including Jelly Roll Morton, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck, and Charles Mingus, as well as contemporary compositions.
Highlights for this performance will include Jaco Pastorius’ jazz and funk interpretation of a James Brown classic, Duke Ellington’s sophisticated and sardonic response to the swing standard “In the Mood,” a pair of tributes to two of jazz’s greatest tenor sax soloists: Dave Breubeck salutes Michael Brecker while Mingus eulogizes Lester Young, an updated version of the legendary standard “Body and Soul,” and a collage of New Orleans’ distinctive musical personality, past and present.
The public is invited and there is no charge for admission.
