CU Relay for Life, Saturday, March 29
Athens, W.Va. – Concord University will host the American Cancer Society’s fundraiser, Relay for Life, Saturday, March 29, 2008, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Leslie R. and Ruby Webb Carter Center.
Money raised will go towards helping cancer patients and their families in the form of research, education, advocacy and service. Since 2002, Concord University’s Relay for Life has raised over $135,000. Concord’s goal this year is to raise $18,000.
Dr. Angelique Edwards, associate professor of physical education at Concord, is heading up the event. She described the event, saying, “This is our seventh annual Relay for Life. We continue to hold this event each year to raise awareness for different types of cancer, prevention, resources and advocacy. I feel that it is important for young people to get involved with community service work. This is one way as a university that we can work together for a worthy cause.”
The theme for this year’s event is “beaches.” Cancer survivors are asked to join students for the opening ceremony and survivor’s walk at 6 p.m. There will also be a luminary ceremony where luminary bags are lit in order to honor those who have battled cancer.
