BSU at CU Makes Contribution to Daycare Center
Athens, W.Va. – Members of the Black Student Union (BSU) at Concord University saw a need and decided to become involved. Beginning last fall, the organization, with approximately 20 members, began to raise funds to support their philanthropic project, helping the CASE/Concord Child Development Center, which is located in the lower level of South Towers at Concord University. Ninety-eight children, ranging in age from three months to 12, make use of the facility.
“We wanted to be seen as performing a service; we didn’t want people to think we were just a social organization,” stated President, Akeya Carter-Bozman, from Beckley. “So we began raising funds last fall by hosting road stops, selling concessions at last fall’s homecoming, accepting donations, and hosting our Valentine’s Day fundraiser—“crush for a Crush”; selling orange Crush soda. We raised nearly $300, with $250 going toward the purchase of 10 child-size cots that will be used in the daycare center here on campus.”
“This is phase one of our project,” she stated. “Next year, we hope to apply for grants to make improvements in the daycare center area: possibly some playground equipment, fencing, or murals.”
The check was presented to Ms. Florence Sargent, director for the CASE/Concord Child Development Center by BSU Treasurer, Ms. Andrea Bell from Kimball.
“This [third week of April] is the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) week,” stated Assistant Professor of Education and BSU Sponsor, Ms. Diane Grych. “We thought it would be timely to make the presentation to the center at this time to focus attention on educating young children.”
“The BSU will be hosting a birthday bash this weekend for 20 children in the WE CAN (Working to Eliminate Child Abuse and Neglect, a project of the Children’s Home Society in Mercer County) program,” said Ms. Bell. “We enjoy working with children.”
