Concord University Students Holding Basketball Tournament to Aid Haitian Earthquake Victims
ATHENS, W.VA. - Caroline Stout knows first-hand that life for many Haitians prior to last week’s devastating earthquake in Port-au-Prince, Haiti was already an existence plagued by daily hardships. The Concord University senior has made more than half a dozen medical mission trips there.
“The devastation is unimaginable…you can’t imagine the poverty,” she said. “It was overwhelming to visit before…now it breaks my heart.”
Stout and her fellow Concord classmates are rallying to bring aid to the earthquake victims and have organized a basketball tournament fund-raiser. Sponsored by Concord Students for Haiti Earthquake Relief, the event is being held on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Carter Center on the Concord University campus in Athens.
Students, faculty and staff are participating. The tournament will be 5 on 5 with a 7 member per team max. Each game will be 15 minutes. The tournament finale will feature a contest between the winning student team and a faculty/staff all-star team.
Admission is $1 per person and the cost to compete is $2 per player. Additional donations would be greatly appreciated, organizers said.
To sign up to play please contact Katrina Ostermann at firstname.lastname@example.org or Danielle Pye at email@example.com. An information table will also be available in front of the Concord University bookstore from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. through Thursday.
Proceeds will go to Randolph World Ministries where they will be used to buy food, water, and medical supplies. To learn more about the ministry visit: http://www.randolphworldministries.org.
