Concord University Student-Athletes Collecting Books for Children
ATHENS - Admission to the Jan. 30 hoops doubleheader between Concord University and Wheeling Jesuit will be waived for fans if they bring a children’s book to donate to a student-athlete project. The women’s game begins at 4 p.m. in the Carter Center followed by the men’s game at 6 p.m.
Members of Concord’s various athletic teams are collecting the books to give to children at a Charleston area women’s shelter during the 50th Annual WVIAC Basketball Tournament March 3-6, 2010. Each year the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference sponsors a community service project at tournament time. This year student-athletes from around the state will read to children at the shelter.
Concord University is taking the project to the next level by collecting books to give as a gift to the children, Carol Bonnes, Concord University assistant athletic director and head women’s soccer coach, said.
“We wanted to do something extra,” she said.
Concord University’s Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) is sponsoring the project on the Athens campus.
Books are being collected at Concord through March 1. They may be mailed to the Concord University Athletic Department, P.O. Box 1000, Athens, WV 24712; dropped off at the Athletic Department office in the Carter Center; or brought to any of Concord’s remaining home basketball games. (Free admission for donating a book will only be offered at the Jan. 30, 2010 game.)
Both new and gently-used books will be appreciated, Bonnes said.
