The festival will highlight internationally acclaimed films from Spain, Argentina and the United States and feature guest speaker, Dr. Alberto Villamandos, from the University of Missouri, Kansas City, Mo.
All movies are in Spanish with English subtitles and will be shown at 7:30 p.m. nightly in Marsh Hall 237.
Featured films include: “Quiceañera,” (USA, 2006), Monday, March 22; “Leonera (Lion’s Den),” (Argentina, 2008), Tuesday, March 23; “Mar adentro (The Sea Inside),” (Spain, 2004), Wednesday, March 24; and “Entre tinieblas (Dark Habits),” (Spain, 1983), Thursday, March 25.
Closing night festivities on March 25 include a guest lecture by Dr. Villamandos at 4:30 p.m. in the Student Center State Room. Dr. Villamandos’ topic is “Punks, Nuns and Boleros in 1980’s Madrid: Cultural Recycling in Pedro Almodóvar’s Early Movies.” A reception will follow at 6 p.m.
“The Festival itself marks the successful initiation of Concord University’s Spanish program, which now offers for the first time, two new degree programs: the Bachelor of Science in Education with certification in Spanish, and the Bachelor of Arts with a major or minor concentration in Spanish,” Dr. Matthew Edwards, Concord University assistant professor of Spanish, said.
“The Spanish program prides itself on integrating culture and history into advanced language learning and is part of a campus-wide initiative by our President, Dr. Gregory Aloia, to promote international understanding as an essential part of the Concord experience,” he said.
The film festival is sponsored by Concord University’s Division of Languages and Literature, Office of Multicultural Affairs and Spanish Club. It is free and open to the public.
