Concord University Hosting Spring Commencement
Athens, W.Va. - Concord University will host spring commencement on Saturday, May 8, 2010 in the Leslie R. and Ruby Webb Carter Center.
Two ceremonies will be held to accommodate the number of graduates and their families and guests. A morning ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. and an afternoon ceremony is planned for 2 p.m.
Students will participate in a ceremony based on their fields of study. The morning ceremony will include candidates for graduation in the master’s program and undergraduates from the divisions of business, education and human performance and fine arts. Participating in the afternoon ceremony will be candidates for graduation from the divisions of languages and literature, natural sciences, social sciences, interdisciplinary studies and the regents program.
Candidates meeting requirements for graduation in May 2010, as well as those who could have graduated in December 2009 or may qualify for graduation in August 2010, will participate.
Concord University cancelled fall commencement ceremonies in December 2009 due to a winter storm. Students scheduled to graduate at that time were invited to participate in the upcoming spring commencement.
The registrar’s office reports that 13 graduate candidates (including three returning from December and one for August) have applied for graduation along with 243 undergraduate candidates (including 31 returning from December.) Ninety-six individuals will graduate with honors. The Division of Social Sciences has the largest number of graduates and the Division of Education and Human Performance is second.
Out-of-state graduate candidates include 29 from Virginia and 11 from other states including Alaska, Arizona, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Tennessee and Florida. Five international students representing Bulgaria, Croatia, Canada and the United Arab Emirates are also among the graduate candidates.
Valedictorians are: Class of December 2009, Sarah Beth Sammons, Beckley; and Class of May 2010, Derek Addison Bonnett, Crab Orchard; Donovan Lee Huffer, Churchville, Va.; and Whitney Meschell Shaffer, Charleston.
Members of Concord’s Class of 1960 will be recognized during the 10 a.m. ceremony in honor of their 50th reunion.
A reception will be held on the front lawn of the Carter Center, weather permitting, following both ceremonies.
Concord University’s Center for Academic Technologies is taping both the morning and afternoon commencement ceremonies. DVDs may be purchased for $20 each and may be ordered by calling 304-384-5365.
