MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR BLANKENSHIP PLANNED FOR TONIGHT

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University cheerleading team and the CU chapter of the Delta Zeta sorority, in conjunction with the Concord Department of Athletics, will hold a public memorial service for former cheerleading head coach Lisa Blankenship on Thursday, Feb. 23, in the auditorium of the Alexander Fine Arts Center on the CU campus in Athens. The service will run from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and is open to the public.
Blankenship passed away unexpected on Feb. 12, at the age of 57.
She earned her undergraduate degree from Concord and began working for the University in 1977. She was head cheerleading coach for 20 years, elevating CU into one of the nation’s best Division II programs. The Athens resident was also the media specialist at nearby PikeView High School.
Blankenship is survived by her husband, Joe, and three children. The family has deep connections to Concord. Joe is the tennis head coach and her daughter, Sara, is the assistant cheerleading coach. One of her sons, John Paul, is a member of the Concord Athletics Hall of Fame.
