ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University Performing Artist Series is hosting the Gee-Mackey Duo on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. in the Alexander Fine Arts Center’s main auditorium. The Fine Arts Center is located on Concord’s campus at 1000 Vermillion Street in Athens, W.Va.
David Gee and Lynne Mackey are a cello and piano duo. They will perform a new piece by Dr. Timothy Mainland, a music professor at Concord University, as well as classical and other contemporary pieces. Gee and Mackey have been performing together since 2004 and have commissioned new pieces from several composers. In 2008, they travelled to Spain and Morocco where they performed pieces by Dr. Mainland and Dr. Craig Naylor, a former professor of music at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va.
Dr. Mainland’s piece, “Overture,” is a two movement piece for this ensemble. “It’s really neat when you write a piece and someone performs it for you and brings it to life,” Dr. Mainland says. He describes it as a colorful piece with the sound of the cello and piano blending together to create illusions. Admission is free and the concert is open to faculty, staff, and students, as well as the community.
