ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University Collegiate Singers will present their fall concert “Missa Eclectica” on Friday, Nov. 1, 2013 at 7 p.m. in the Alexander Fine Art Center’s Main Auditorium. The Fine Arts Center is located on Concord’s campus at 1000 Vermillion Street in Athens, W.Va.
“Missa Eclectica” will feature music of the Catholic Church following the musical structure of Mass Ordinary. The text of The Ordinary is in Latin and follows a particular order: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, the Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnus Dei. The choir will also be singing some modern gospel works of Shawn Kirchner to close out the concert.
Dr. Keely Rhodes, a choral conductor at Concord, explained why the event is called “Missa Eclectica.”
“There are thousands of masses composed by a multitude of composers throughout the various eras of the Catholic Church,” she said. “Instead of presenting a mass from one composer and one musical era, I have decided to ‘pick-and-mix’ pieces from a variety of major choral works.”
The concert is a free event open to the public; however, donations will be accepted to help defer the cost of new choral music.
The Collegiate Singers are the main vocal choir of Concord University. They are an unauditioned choir and open to anyone interested in singing and who registers for MUS 451. The class meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 12 noon.
