CONCORD UNIVERSITY HOSTING 2017 EARTH DAY CELEBRATION

ATHENS, W.Va. – Concord University is observing Earth Day with a week-long celebration April 17-22. The official date for Earth Day 2017 is Saturday, April 22.

Opportunities for recycling, campus clean-up, tree planting and learning about gardening are all part of the agenda. Students, faculty, staff, alumni and members of the community are invited to participate.

On Monday, April 17 an information table will be set up on the ground level of the Student Center. Material will be provided on the events of the week; craft ideas from recycled products; and tobacco prevention.

A Master Gardener presentation will take place on Tuesday, April 18 at 6 p.m. in the Student Center. Attendees will receive free potted vegetable and herb plants.

On Wednesday, April 19 faculty, staff and students are invited to work with Concord’s Student Government Association in planting a new addition to campus. The tree planting is scheduled to begin at 3:45 p.m. below the wall directly across the street from the Student Center.

Campus clean-up is planned for Thursday, April 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Different areas of the campus will be covered each hour. Students, faculty and staff are invited to assist with this activity.

On Earth Day, Saturday, April 22, CU students and alumni will work with the Concord United Methodist Church on preparations for a community garden for Athens.

Additionally, Student Support Services (SSS) is sponsoring “Bee” Conscious of Nature throughout Our World. CU students involved with SSS will receive packets of bee-friendly flower seeds.

SSS Director Terri Philpott explains that the seeds produce flowers that are “favorites of bees” and “friendly for bees to pollinate.” The project brings awareness to the declining number of bees that are important to pollination.
