ATHENS, W.Va. - Concord University’s McNair Scholars Program, along with the psychology faculty, will host the seventh annual Undergraduate Research Day Thursday, April 24 in the Ballroom of the Jerry and Jean Beasley Student Center from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

A Graduate and Professional School Fair will be held in the Ballroom Lobby beginning at 10 a.m. in conjunction with the event. Fifteen institutions are scheduled to participate.

This year’s Undergraduate Research Day will feature approximately 120 posters and approximately 9 paper presentations by undergraduates from Concord University and Bluefield State College along with Concord students from a variety of disciplines. BSC is a partnering institution through Concord’s McNair Program.

Students will present papers from 9:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. in the Ballroom and AB Conference Room and from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Ballroom. The poster session will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. in the Ballroom.

The keynote address will be presented at 2:15 p.m. by Dr. Erik Augustson. He is a behavioral scientist at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Md. where he also serves as the director of the Smokefree.gov Initiative.

Dr. Augustson received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of New Mexico. His current primary lines of research involve studies considering psychosocial determinants of smoking and other health behaviors, and the use of emerging technologies as a means to improve reach and engagement of interventions for health behaviors.

The Smokefree.gov Initiative has grown to encompass four websites, smokefree.gov, women.smokefree.gov, Espanol.smokefree.gov and teen.smokefree.gov, seven text message programs, five smartphone apps and multiple social media platforms. Last year, more than 3 million smokers interacted with Smokefree.gov resources.

Dr. Augustson has also performed research in the areas of chronic pain, cancer screening, sun safety, obesity, and health communication topics.
