CONCORD UNIVERSITY OFFERING STUDY ABROAD OPPORTUNITY IN MEXICO

ATHENS, W.Va. – A study abroad opportunity in Mexico is being offered by Concord University.

Concord students, two Concord Spanish instructors, and other members of the community, will travel together to Oaxaca, Mexico, where they will spend four weeks (May 14-June 11, 2016) immersed in the local culture. Students will study Spanish and other topics at the prestigious Benito Juárez Autonomous University of Oaxaca, earning 6-9 credit hours.

Participants will enjoy many cultural experiences in the charming and welcoming city, including cuisine, music, dance and art, as well as recreational excursions in the beautiful surrounding landscape.

Students will live with local hosts (two students per host home). The Concord Spanish instructors, Dr. Parker Shaw and Ms. Amorette Sherwood, will accompany the students on the flights to and from Oaxaca, and will also accompany the students through the duration of the program.

“Our area holds very few opportunities for immersion in the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures,” Shaw said. “Those who study abroad experience a leap forward in their fluency, while they broaden their social and academic horizons. In Oaxaca, participants will also enjoy one of the planet’s most celebrated regional cuisines.”

“Though in-class learning of a second language can result in considerable results, the only way to truly acquire a language is to immerse oneself in a culture that lives in that language. This program welcomes learners of Spanish – students and non-students – of all proficiency levels, including those who wish to use this program as their first plunge into the language,” he said.

Sol Education Abroad is a partner in providing this study abroad opportunity. The cost of the trip is $3295. Online applications and an initial payment of $500 are due on March 11, 2016.

To learn more or to apply please visit the following website: http://www.soleducation.com/programs/_custom/2016/mexico/concord%20university/concord%20university.html. Apply by clicking on the red “Apply Now” button on the right side of the website.

While the application form asks for a social security number and a passport number, applicants do not need to provide those numbers at the time of application, but will need to provide them before traveling to the program in Mexico.

A valid passport is necessary. A passport application may be obtained from the Princeton or Beckley post office or from Dr. Shaw’s office, Room 324 Marsh Hall on Concord’s Athens campus.
