CONCORD UNIVERSITY CELEBRATING EARTH DAY 2016
WITH WEEK OF ACTIVITIES
ATHENS, W.Va. – Concord University is celebrating Earth Day 2016 during the week of April 18 – 22 with several activities.
Grounds clean-up will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20, at various locations on the Athens campus, including the residence halls. To sign up to help or for more information contact Michelle Laneave at email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org. Volunteers will need to stop by the Home Base/Information Desk on the ground floor of the Jerry and Jean Beasley Student Center to receive instructions and pick up supplies. A free biodegradable pot with vegetable and flower seeds will be given away as well.
Concord’s Tobacco Coalition will be giving away reusable water bottles on Wednesday. The water bottles will contain general information on tobacco use and its effect on the environment. Students are also creating cardboard signs with environmental facts to post around campus. For more information, contact the Bonner House at email@example.com
A gardening presentation by the WVU Extension Service is scheduled on Wednesday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Subway Stage on the ground floor of the Jerry and Jean Beasley Student Center.
The Office of Housing and Residence Life will be offering many programs for students throughout the week. Topics include why recycling is important, carbon monoxide levels in various vehicles, composting, alternative energy sources, energy conservation, disposing of hazardous material, and carbon footprints. Flyers will be posted in Residence Halls with details for each program. Students may also contact their Resident Director for more information.
Wednesday, April 20, through Friday, April 22, Student Support Services will make and package bird feeders to go home with children in Concord’s Child Development Center on Earth Day.
Concord’s Bonner Scholars Program is facilitating a pill bottle recycling program through Matthew 25: Ministries. Unfortunately, these #5 plastic bottles cannot be recycled in the community. By recycling pill bottles with Matthew 25: Ministries, plastic in landfills is reduced and cash is generated for those in need of medical care. There will be boxes set up around campus in the Student Center and Residence Halls for donations of pill bottles. Prescription or over-the-counter pill bottles of any size and any type cap are acceptable for donation. For additional information, contact the Bonner House at firstname.lastname@example.org.
On Earth Day, Friday, April 22, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., an information table will be set up on the ground floor of the Jerry and Jean Beasley Student Center. This table will contain educational material, games, quizzes, and candy.
Students from Concord University’s Beckley campus are volunteering again this year with the Raleigh County Solid Waste Authority. The students will be participating in a Beckley city clean up on Earth Day, Friday, April 22. If you would like to join the students in this clean up afternoon, or have a business organization that would like to support this event, contact Lori Pace at email@example.com or 304-763-5396.
Persons with disabilities should contact Nancy Ellison, 1-304-384-6086 or 1-800-344-6679 extension 6086
if special assistance is required for access to an event scheduled by the University on campus.
