Admission to BSW Program

Students are eligible to apply for admission after they have completed the required 30 credit hours of designated courses at Concord (see list below). Application into the Social Work program must be submitted prior to enrolling in Social Work Research Methods, SOWK 305.

Admissions and Retention Committee meetings are held several times throughout each semester. The Admissions Application is to be completed and submitted to the Social Work Department office, room 107 Marsh Hall or you may email your completed application to Ms. Vanessa Howell at vhowell@concord.edu. Students will be notified of a time and date for their interview with the Admissions and Retention Committee, which consists of all full-time social work faculty. It is necessary that students attend their scheduled interview session once registered to do so. Failure to comply may result in the delay of admission to the Social Work program.

Admission to 5 Year BSW/MSW Program (5 Year Plan)

Students who plan to pursue their graduate degree in social work, Master of Social Work (MSW), may complete both their BSW and MSW program in five (5) years by applying to the 5 year plan. Under the 5 year plan, students apply for admission to the MSW program when they apply for admission to the BSW program. Thus, positioning the student for completion of both the BSW and MSW in five years. Letters of reference submitted for admission to the BSW program will also be used for admission to the MSW program. Hence, letters of reference are submitted only once for students under the 5 Year plan. Similarly, the graduate application fee is waived for students under the 5 year plan. GPA and ethical standards must be maintained throughout the first four years of the program for admission to the MSW program under the 5 year plan.

Admission to MSW Program


Admission to BSW/MSW Program under the 5 Year Plan
Students following the 5 year plan can be admitted directly to the MSW program. During the Student's last semester in the BSW program, the student under the 5 year plan, submits the Notice to Continue to the MSW Program.

Standard 2 Year Full-Time or Part-Time MSW Program Admission Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Social Work Field Education Placement FairHave a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university
  • Have a 2.5 or higher GPA overall
  • Have a 2.75 GPA in the last 60 hours (provisional acceptance for applicants with lower GPA will be considered on an individual basis)
  • Submit three letters of reference (two from the student’s academic program and the third from someone who knows the candidate well, preferably in a work or volunteer setting and is/was in a supervisory role with the candidate)
  • Submit a personal statement that includes the student’s background, interests, experiences, and goals; perceptions regarding a social issue; views of social and economic justice in rural settings; and reasons for pursuing MSW degree
  • Complete/submit the application for admission and although not required, you may submit a resume to supplement your application

The GRE is not required.

Advanced Standing MSW Program Admission Requirements

Applicants must:

have a bachelor of social work degree from an accredited CSWE undergraduate social work program;

  • Have a 2.75 or higher GPA overall
  • Have a 3.0 GPA in the social work classes (in rare cases a provisional status may be granted, this will be determined on a case by case basis)
  • Indicate application to the Advanced Standing Program on the application for admission
  • Submit three letters of reference (two from the student’s academic program including one from a social work faculty member and one from the undergraduate faculty field supervisor; the third reference from either the agency field instructor or an employer/supervisor)
  • Submit a personal statement that includes the student’s background, interests, experiences, and goals; perceptions regarding a social issue; views of social and economic justice in rural settings; and reasons for pursuing MSW degree
  • Complete/submit the application for admission and although not required, you may submit a resume to supplement your application

The GRE is not required.

Application Deadlines

Advanced Standing and Standard Program: For fullest consideration, applications for early admission should be received by February 15.

Applications for regular admission should be received by March 15.

Students will be notified of the decision of the Admissions Committee by April 15, if not sooner.
