Welcome to the first edition of CU Student E-news!  We are excited to introduce an easy-to-use resource for important student information. CU E-news will be published two times each semester and will be sent to your Concord email account and posted online, so be sure to look for future publications.

Academic Schedule

  • November 3 – 12 Course Selection, 2015 Spring Semester (for students presently enrolled)
  • November 24-28 Thanksgiving Recess
  • December 1, Monday, 4:00 pm Last Day to Officially Withdraw from the University
  • December 5, Friday Last Class Day
  • December 8, Monday, 8:00 am Fall Semester Exams Begin
  • December 12, Friday, 5:00 pm Fall Semester Ends
  • December 13, Saturday Commencement and Alumni Day
  • December 20, Saturday Last Day for Refunding Room Reservation Fee for Students Who will not be Resident Students.

Exam Schedule

Final Exam Schedule

Music Jury examinations are scheduled individually by the Department of Music.

Evening Classes – Athens: Classes meeting at 4:00 PM on Tuesday or Thursday will have a two-hour final beginning at 4:30 PM during the regularly scheduled class meeting time during finals week, DEC 8-12. Classes that start at 4:30 PM or later will have a two-hour final during the regularly scheduled class meeting time during finals week, DEC 8-12. If the two-hour exam block results in a conflict with an exam in a later evening course, the student must notify the professor of the later course and either arrange for a late arrival time or reschedule the exam at the discretion of the professor.

BECKLEY HEC FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE
During Final Exam Week (December 8-12, 2014) Beckley campus final exams will be administered during the normal class times except for those listed below:

The final exam for the Beckley classes that meet on Tuesday/Thursday will be as follows:
MATH 103 on Tuesday at 2:00 PM
MATH 105 on Tuesday at 2:00 PM

ENGL 204 (Section 30) on Tuesday at 2:00 PM
ENGL 204 (Section 31) on Thursday at 4:00 PM
LANG 101 on Tuesday at 2:00 PM
LANG 102 on Thursday at 2:00 PM

The final exam for the Beckley classes that meet on Wednesday/Friday will be as follows:
ENGL 101 (Section 30) on Wednesday at 11:00 AM
ENGL 101 (Section 31) on Friday at 12:30 PM
HIST 101 on Wednesday at 11:00 AM
MATH 101 on Friday at 12:30 PM
MATH 103 on Friday at 3:00 PM

Grades Due
Faculty Access to MYCU for Grade Submission will be available
Friday, DEC 5, 4:00 PM to Tuesday, DEC 16, 2:00 PM

TO THE MEMBERS OF THE FACULTY:
Any examination for which this schedule does not provide, or any departure from it, must be approved in advance by the Vice President and Academic Dean, on the request of the instructor made through the department and/or division chairperson. Faculty also should carefully note the deadlines for submission of grades. I urge each Faculty member to submit grades as requested in the time-frame listed in this memorandum.

Financial Aid 411

Financial aid will not disbursed for the spring semester until you have confirmed enrollment with the Business Office. Be sure to sign and return the bottom of your bill or send an email toacctsrec@concord.edufrom your Concord email account.

Financial aid will not post unless you are enrolled full-time. If you will be attending part-time contact our office at 304-384-6069 orfinaid@concord.eduso we can adjust your awards and post your aid.

December graduates – be sure to complete loan exit counseling (www.studentloans.gov).

Did you know?
If you borrow the maximum Stafford Loan each year for 4 years you will owe $27,000 ($5,500; $6,500; $7,500; $7,500).

If you owe $27,000 under the standard repayment plan your monthly payment will be around $270 each month for 10 years.

Students who have a balance, hold on their account, parking/library fines, etc. need to get these things taken care of before trying to register for classes, and especially before graduation.

Also, all students need to make sure the Business Office has their correct addresses and phone numbers on file.

Advising Update

Now is the time to start meeting with your advisor to make your schedules and to register for next semester’s classes. If you have not signed up for an advising meeting, do so immediately! Did you know that you should register and complete 15 hours per semester of relevant coursework in order to graduate on time (for degrees with 120 hours)? When making your schedule, you should check the Progression Sheet (and 4-year plans) for your selected major. Also, if you haven’t selected a major or want to change majors, you need to complete the Declaration of Major Form.

To register for classes, go to: www.concord.edu -> Log into MyCU -> Student Tab -> Add/Drop Classes -> Select Spring 2015 Term -> Type in PIN Number -> Enter in CRN Numbers -> Click Done

Residence Life Dates to Remember

  • November 21, 2014: Residence Halls Officially Close for Thanksgiving Break at 5:00pm
  • November 30, 2014: Residence Halls Re-Open at 1:00pm
  • December 12, 2014: Residence Halls Officially Close for Winter Break
  • January 11, 2014: Residence Halls Re-Open for Spring 2015 Semester

Anyone wishing to stay at any time during an Official Closing will need to make prior arrangements with the Office of Housing & Residence Life to pay the additional fees in advance.

Important Student Information

It is not too late to get help this semester. There are a number of tutoring opportunities for students. Concord offers free drop-in peer tutoring in a variety of courses. No appointment necessary! All drop-in student tutors are recommended by faculty and have at least a 3.0 GPA. Check out the drop-in tutoring schedule online: https://apps.concord.edu/tutoring/ If you have any questions about drop-in tutoring, please contact the Academic Success Center (asc@concord.eduor 304-384-6074). Concord also has free online tutoring 24/7 for most classes: SMARTHINKING.
 Students using SMARTHINKING for the first time need to register through MyCU; then they can access SMARTHINKING.com from a web browser. 

Emergency Text Alert System With wintry weather approaching, we encourage all students to sign up for the CU Emergency Text Alert System -- a text messaging alert system that is used to notify students of security, safety, and weather related notices on campus. You can easily register for this service by going tohttp://sms.concord.edu/. If you have any questions, please call the IT help desk at ext.5291 or by email atcuhelpdesk@concord.edu.

Inclement Weather Schedules To view the Inclement Weather Schedules for both the Athens Campus and the Beckley Campus, follow this link: http://www.concord.edu/emergency-alerts

Online Withdrawal Form Students may begin the university withdrawal process by completing the online withdrawal form: https://apps.concord.edu/machform35/view.php?id=80318. Please contact the Academic Success Center (304-384-6074) after completing the form to finish the withdrawal process. The last day to withdraw from the University for the Fall 2014 semester is Monday, December 1, 2014, 4:00 p.m.

Microsoft Office ProPlus For Students
Concord University is a member of Microsoft’s Student Advantage Program where currently enrolled students are eligible for a free license to download and use Microsoft Office Professional Plus.  This license was automatically assigned at the start of enrollment at CU and remains until withdrawing or graduation.  Students can install on up to 5 machines, windows or mac, as well as use the mobile versions of Office Mobile.  After withdrawal or graduation the license is removed and the software enters a reduced functionality mode limiting it to viewing or printing only.  Graduates can visit the site OFFICE 365 EDUCATION, enter their @mycu.concord.edu email address and get the license re-instated.  For more information visit our support page at http://www.concord.edu/office365

  • Monday, December 1, 4:00 p.m. – Reservation Deadline for December Senior Dinner
  • Thursday, December 4, 6:00 p.m. December Senior Dinner and Cap and Gown Pick-up  (Invitations will be sent via email.  Reservations Required)
  • Friday, December 5 – Saturday, December 13 – Cap and Gown Pick-up at the Bookstore. If you are unable to attend the Senior Dinner, you will need to pick up your cap and gown at the Bookstore.  Bookstore hours are M-Th, 7:45 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Fridays – 7:45 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and Saturday, December 13, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Are you a graduating senior? Have you considered your options after graduation? Are you going to start working in your field of interest or continue your education in graduate school? Now is the time to get it all figured out! Preparing for your future after graduation takes some time and effort, so get started right away. On average, job searches take from 6-9 months, so you should be knee-deep in your employment search by now. If you haven’t started, then you need to kick it into gear.

Here are some essential things to consider:

  • Interview Outfit?
  • Researched Companies of Interest?
  • Practiced for Interview?
  • Transportation to Interview?
  • Money to get to interview?
  • Asked people to be references?
  • Attended Career Services workshop?

Graduate/Professional School Checklist

  • Researched schools of interest?
  • Visited schools of interest or contacted them via email or by phone?
  • Aware of deadlines for applications for admission and assistantships?
  • Taken entrance exam?
  • Written personal statement?
  • Written resume or CV?
  • Created a tracking system for all application materials?
  • Asked people to write reference letters?
  • Prepared for a personal interview?
  • Thanked those that helped me with the process?
  • Planned a budget on which I can survive?
  • Contingency plan?

IT Corner

Technology Services Consolidates Onto Second Floor of Rahall Technology Center

The Office of Technology Services has recently undergone a reorganization of office space that makes it more accessible to the campus community.  We are pleased to announce that the IT Help Desk, as well as the network, residence halls, and hardware support technicians, have all joined the existing technology staff on the 2nd floor of the Rahall building.  This move combines all end user support staff into one central location, making it easier for faculty, staff, and students to find the support they need.  Whether it be related to Banner, Blackboard, email, hardware/software, the network, or the website, all of your support questions can be addressed in person by visiting The Office of Technology Services in the Rahall Technology Building, room 254.

Athletics Update

We are very proud of all of our sports teams here at Concord. Our athletes put in so much time and dedication to make our school and community shine with pride!

A special shout-out goes to our football team for remaining undefeated with a record of 10-0, grasping the #1 spot in the Mountain East Conference and ranking both regionally and nationally. Way to go Mountain Lions!
