Banner 9

Technology Services will be upgrading Banner 8 to Banner 9 throughout 2017 with completion scheduled before the end of 2018Banner 8 will be moving to sustaining support status effective January 1, 2019.

Sustaining support status means there will be no new software releases, patches or fixes, regulatory updates or solution enhancements released for Banner 8.  We must leverage this opportunity to upgrade to ensure continued regulatory compliance and business operations.

Banner 9 in a nutshell

Banner 9 includes a fresh, new user interface with improved tools and capabilities.  The new user interface provides improved accessibility for all users.  Banner 9 also eliminates the need for a Java applet for end users, drastically expanding the browsers and platforms that can now access the software.  You can now use your mobile device or tablet to access Banner information.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Q: I just see a white screen when I enter a screen name, what should I do?

This usually is caused by your browser's inability to integrate with Java.  Many browsers have dropped support for the Java plugin to increase security.  Java will remain a requirement for accessing Banner while we upgrade to Banner 9.  To support this, you'll need to use Internet Explorer or Firefox release 51 or earlier.  If you still have difficulty, please contact our IT Help Desk at (304) 384-5291.

The good news is that java will no longer be required once we have fully upgraded to Banner 9!

  • Q: Will I use the same username/password to login to Banner 9 as I do with Banner 8?

No.  Banner 9 will utilize the same credentials that you use to login to your PC or Office 365 e-mail.  Note that logins now require two-factor authentication.

  • Q: Will I be able to access Banner 9 on my mobile device or tablet?

Yes!  Banner 9 can now be accessed on devices that weren't previously supported due to the old requirement for the Java plugin.  This compatibility will be realized when each screen / form is transformed to the new Banner 9 page.  Full compatibility with mobile devices will only be available once we have fully upgraded.

Note that you will still need to connect via VPN when attempting to access Banner 9 from off-campus.

  • Q: How will this affect my routine jobs or reports in job submission?

The Banner 9 upgrade is primarily focused on improvements to the user interface.  This means that the underlying database structure and jobs should remain unaffected from this upgrade.  Your job submission tasks should run as expected.

  • Q: Which forms (or screens) will no longer be available in Banner 9?

The Banner User Group has identified many custom forms that are critical to business operations.  These forms will be transformed for use in Banner 9 before January 1, 2019.

Keep a lookout for notice e-mails from Technology Services regarding the retirement of forms.  You should use these communications as an opportunity to notify our office of the forms that you require to perform the duties of your position or department.

    • Internet Explorer 10, 11
