Welcome to the Department of Business

Housed in the Nick Rahall Technology Center, the Department of Business at Concord University is known for offering quality degrees in accounting, finance, management, and marketing, in addition to business education.  Concord's accounting graduates have distinguished themselves for many years by earning high pass rates on the CPA examination among state colleges and universities in West Virginia.  Our graduates can be found in positions of leadership in major corporations and public institutions with careers that span the globe and whose influence extends Concord’s reputation wherever they lead.  Our graduates are also highly successful in continuing their education by attaining graduation degrees from intuitions throughout the region and across the nation.

We are dedicated to providing the best business education available through the efforts of highly credentialed and active faculty members who are recognized for contributions in their respective fields and who believe teaching comes first. Further, we are committed to cultivating within our students an appreciation of global perspectives so that they can go forward in their careers with an understanding of the interdependence of economies in the world today.  Our faculty offer students opportunities to develop leadership abilities and stress teamwork and ethics in coursework.

The Department's Symposium Series gives students the opportunity to hear from and meet successful business leaders working in local, state, national and international organizations.  Students are invited to attend Career Day events arranged throughout the year by our Career Center staff and to meet locally with active alumni who are eager to help improve students' career pursuits.  Through participation in our business student organizations, students are provided with a variety of learning and networking opportunities.  Organized field trips to local, regional, national, and international businesses can be available to participating members in order to gain firsthand knowledge of their operations and to learn more about the business environments of which they may one day be a part.  The Department also has a very active Business Advisory Council (BAC) with representation from local to international businesses. The BAC is very dedicated to providing students with learning and networking opportunities, also.

Business Advisory Council
The Department’s Business Advisory Council (BAC) offers a wealth of business experience that assists the Department in the execution of our mission and goals. The Council provides consultation advice for the continuous improvement of programs and curriculum and helps keep the faculty informed of new business trends and practices. The Council also helps students identify internship and career opportunities and works with students providing career planning advice.

Council Strategy

The strategy of the business advisory council is to assist the Chair of the business department in planning for the growth, enhancement, and competitiveness of the Concord University Department of Business. The strategic plan will help the Department of Business:
  • Sustain and enhance competitiveness
  • Grow
  • Attract faculty and students
  • Become a center of excellence

Council Committees

The formation of committees can help us work on individual goals by area. The three areas of concentration are:
  1. Committee on student enhancement
  2. Committee on business department competitiveness
  3. Committee on business community needs
All members should be involved in a least one committee of particular interest to them. Frequency of meetings will be up to the committee, but should be no less than two per year.

The Business Student Advisory Council (SBAC) provides on-going advice on student and academic issues and college operations to the Department of Business Chair.

The Business Student Advisory Council was implemented in the Fall of 2006 to provide the Department of Business faculty with input from a very important stakeholder group – our students! The Council’s purpose is to use your input and suggestions to make recommendations to the Department of Business faculty and staff about a variety of issues. Business Advisory Council Members

There are 3 levels of appointees to this committee, based upon their business experience. A balance of these levels would be ideal for this committee. The strongest committee would be weighted with the most representation being from the highest-experience level group. The levels are: (1) Recent Graduates, (2) Council Members who graduated 7 or more years ago, and (3) Council Members with Highest Levels of Experience. There are also faculty & Student Business Council members on the Council.

Department of Business Student Policies

Participation in College-Wide Assessment Activities

Federal regulations and regional accreditation policies on accountability in higher education require direct assessment of student academic learning. Thus, as a part of the requirements associated with this course, students may be asked to take one or more standardized tests and/or to complete other related activities. The scores of individual students will remain confidential.

General Expectations of Business Students

It is understood that securing an education is the absolute top priority in your life while you are enrolled here, and that all other activities will be prioritized accordingly. All students enrolled in the Department of Business at Concord University will have an attitude and demeanor that demonstrates a real commitment to the learning process. It is recommended students…

  1. devote most of the first two years of your undergraduate education to acquiring the requisite general skills of studying, research, time management, written and oral communications, mathematics, statistics and technological literacy.
  2. be in the class and seated at the stated time class is to begin, and attend all scheduled classes unless alternate arrangements have been made ahead of time.
  3. be prepared for all classes.
  4. be attentive during all classes.
  5. be willing participants in classroom discussions.
  6. read and studied textbook assignments before coming to class, and will come to class with questions prepared about the material they do not understand.
  7. have the required mathematical, statistics, and computer skills needed to enter into upper department courses. (Students not having these skills are expected to acquire them before entering upper department courses. Our upper department courses will enhance these skills.)
  8. be able to follow directions on exams and written assignments. If students do not understand the directions, they will ask questions and seek clarification of the directions.
  9. learn to effectively use technology to prepare papers, problems, assignments; and to present material in both oral and written form.
  10. learn to prepare assignments in various formats and styles as required by individual professors and submit those assignments on time.
  11. prepare case studies for oral discussion by thoroughly studying and analyzing the cases, preparing written notes on the cases, and having prepared answers for case questions or prepared recommendations relative to the assigned cases.
  12. effectively present material, both in oral and written form.
  13. dress appropriately for business courses, especially when there are speakers in class, while making an oral presentation, on field trips, or on internship assignments.
  14. maintain a demeanor appropriate for business professionals.
  15. for full-time students, any outside employment or athletic activity is not to negatively impact on your attendance and/or preparation for classes.
    • It is recommended that students spend at least 3 hours outside class each week for each hour spent in upper department courses, i.e., for each 3 hour class, students could average 9 hours outside class in study and preparation. This does not include the additional time needed to prepare presentations or major written assignments.
    • It is understood that individual professors may ask students to withdraw from courses for habitual tardiness, excessive absences, or disruptive or inappropriate behavior.
    • All students are encouraged to take advantage of faculty office hours, advisement days, career days, student business organizations, Symposiums, Career Development and Placement Center offerings, and on-campus interviews held by potential employers.
    • Students must understand that they, and they alone, bear the ultimate responsibility for meeting all degree requirements. Your advisor is assigned to help you meet degree requirements, but he or she will not be held responsible if you fail to meet them.

Expectations of Graduating Seniors

Upon graduating, undergraduate students should:

  • Have effective oral presentation skills so that they can make convincing oral presentations and defend their stances, proposals, or recommendations with conviction;
  • Have an extensive working vocabulary of business and economic concepts, and be able to articulate and correctly use these terms and concepts;
  • Have the demonstrated ability to prepare and effectively utilize visual aids in the form of charts, graphs, over heads, posters, handouts, and computer based presentations via word processing, spreadsheet, and graphics software;
  • Have good spreadsheet skills so that they can prepare numerical data, such as financial analysis, in a very effective manner and interpret such data readily and intelligently;
  • Have the demonstrated ability to use technology, such as word processing or desk top publishing, write clear, concise and complete professionally-appearing papers and reports that are free from spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, and paragraph structure errors;
  • Have the ability to conduct an extensive library search for material and information, including all types of references and reporting services, and to correctly and appropriately use outside information, including how to correctly cite all sources researched according to whatever citation system they are required to use.

Missing an Examination

  • When students miss an exam/test, students will pick up and complete a Request to Retake an Examination form in the Department Office. On the form the student will record his/her name, ID, course CRN number, course name, reason for absence with verification, date of the test missed, and test name or number. The Department has the discretion to approve or disapprove the Request to Retake an Examination. (Approval will be the responsibility of the Department Chair or an assigned committee.)
  • When it is determined that the student's absence was legitimate, faculty may schedule Make-up Examinations at appropriate times. The rescheduled may be a day later, a week later, or during the week of final exams, as the faculty determine to be appropriate.
  • Students must complete the Request to Retake an Examination form no later than 48 hours after returning to campus.
