Berkey, Jonathan

Biography

Professor Berkey’s main field of study is the American Civil War. His dissertation examined how civilians in Virginia’s lower Shenandoah Valley coped with the complex challenges posed by living in a contested border region during the war. He is in the process of revising his dissertation for publication. Future projects include writing a chapter on Confederate women in a collection of essays on the Shenandoah Valley in the Civil War, and editing a manuscript on borderlands in the American Civil War.
