JAKE HATCHER NAMED GRAND MARSHAL
FOR CONCORD UNIVERSITY HOMECOMING PARADE
ATHENS, W.Va. – Jake Hatcher of Princeton has been named grand marshal for the 2019 Concord University homecoming parade on Thursday, Oct. 17. The parade will begin at 6 p.m. on CU’s Athens campus, progress up Vermillion Street, and end at the Concord United Methodist Church.
Hatcher, who is 102, served in both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army. During his service, he earned the Presidential Citation, commendations from Admiral Chester Nimitz, and the Navy Commendation from Admiral J.J. Clark. Decked out in his Uncle Sam costume, Hatcher is a familiar personality in the Princeton Veterans Day parade.
He has worked at the United Nations, as a social worker for the WV Department of Welfare, as well as a district administrator, and as Mercer County Welfare director. He has also worked in realty. In retirement, Jake keeps busy painting small rocks he finds in the area and sharing them with others.
Concord’s Student Government Association voted to have “A Night at the Movies” as this year’s Homecoming theme. Student floats and homecoming displays will be judged based on the merits of using the theme.
Area groups and organizations interested in placing entries in the parade should email email@example.com or call 304-384-5310.
Following the parade, a bonfire and pep rally will be held in the “valley” (behind the Student Center) on campus. There will be a volleyball tournament and a DJ. The community is invited to attend.
The Concord Mountain Lions will face the Fairmont State Falcons at the homecoming game, Saturday, Oct. 19. Prior to kickoff at 1 p.m., tailgating will be held in the Callaghan Stadium parking lot. (Reservations are required for the main lot, secondary lots are first come, first served).
