THEATRE AT CONCORD UNIVERSITY
The Concord University theatre program offers students a wide range of opportunity within performance and technical theatre. The major is in the Communication Arts and Media Department and the degree is in Communication Arts with an emphasis in Theatre. The advantage to this program is that someone with strong performance and theatre skills also develops expertise in writing, public relations, broadcasting or journalism. Along with extensive performance and technical experience, a theatre student is well-poised for a future career!
The core curriculum includes theatre, public speaking, and journalism. Then, the student designs the program around his or her interests. They can focus on acting, directing or technical theatre. It is also possible to focus on several areas within the field of Communications. For example, while Theatre may be their primary emphasis, a student may also gain experience in public relations or broadcasting.
A main stage play production is produced each semester. In addition to those two larger productions, smaller projects are often presented, giving students many opportunities for performance and technical experience. The entire campus community is encouraged to participate in all theatre production and stage roles and technical staff are not limited to theatre majors or minors.
Each area with the Communications Arts and Media Department offers a hands-on Workshop every semester. Workshop is a way for students to get specific, practical experience. The students in Theatre Workshop provide support to play productions and other projects within the Theatre Department. Students are required to have four semesters of Workshop to graduate, insuring that they earn hands-on experience in their field.
