Scholarship Established in Memory of Prof. Bayless
Athens, W.Va. – Laurence E. Bayless was a respected and distinguished professor who taught at Concord University for 34 years, and retired in 2000. Remembered for his love of field biology, Dr. Bayless taught Appalachian biogeography, ecology and field methods, marine biology, herpetology, developmental biology, ornithology, and general biology.
Dr. Bayless passed away in February 2006. After his death, the Division of Natural Sciences established the Laurence E. Bayless Scholarship for Excellence in Field Biology Scholarship in his memory. Bayless’ former students have also been actively involved in the creation of the fund. The Concord University Alumni Association, Inc. will administer the scholarship.
A resident of Florida, he is survived by his wife, Dianne and son, Thomas.
There is no geographic preference for the recipient of the Laurence E. Bayless Scholarship for Excellence in Field Biology Scholarship, but it is preferred that the student awarded the scholarship be a rising senior at Concord University. Juniors will also be considered. Distribution of funds will be contingent upon available resources.
The student should have aspirations of graduate study in field biology or related areas. The recipient should be of good academic standing (3.0 overall GPA), conduct independent research in field biology, and be nominated and elected by the faculty of the Department of Biology.
Donations may be made to the scholarship via mail to the Concord University Alumni Association, Campus Box 83, P.O. Box 1000, Athens, WV 24712-1000. Please note your designation to the Bayless Scholarship on all donations.
