ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University Board of Governors voted to temporarily inactivate the Mathematics major at its regular meeting on Tuesday.  The Resolution to make the program inactive passed.  Dr. Sally Howard, a political science professor and the faculty representative on the Board, was the only dissenting vote.

Dr. Peter Viscusi, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, reported the Mathematics major has experienced declining enrollments.  Over the past five years, there has been an average of 3.2 graduates each year.  The Higher Education Policy Commission’s minimum requirement is an average of five graduates annually over five years. Currently, there are nine Mathematics majors enrolled, all of whom will have an opportunity to participate in a teach-out so they can graduate with a degree in Mathematics.  The HEPC minimum requirement is an average of 12.5 majors each year for five years.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science will continue to provide math courses needed to serve the curricular needs of other departments and will follow Complete College America guidelines.  The University will maintain its minor in Mathematics.
